In my journey to Calabria last December, I stopped by Cosenza, a beautiful city in the heart of Calabria, surrounded by mountains and crossed by rivers. Join me as I go on a little walk in the streets of this beautiful, off-the-beaten-path Italian gem of a town.

Hi guy, thanx a lot for your journey in Cosenza. A bit about history: Magna Grecia is not from Greek but was opposit to their. Start in Jonic sea and was in Sybarys and Kroton. Root of Cosenza are very old, 1200 BC and start from Brettii People. Cosenza was opposit to Roman Empire and was belligerant People. More invasions are succedeed but it hold on to all. In the history is famous Alarico travel that the legend tell died here with his treasure and was bury in the confluence of the rivers Crati and Busento in the middle of ancient city that store the Castle Svevo-Normanno (1000 AC) and the Duomo (1100 AC). Enjoy 🎉❤

Southern Italians for sure take a lot of pride in their ancient Greek heritage. A lot of famous Ancient Greeks lived there.

The Calabrians are lovely. Was delighted to tour the entire region, including the Greek towns and churches, many archeological sites and the outstanding beaches. The interior has some amazing nature areas. Thank you for this vid!

You had to visit the historic center of Cosenza, the Swabian castle and the Rendano theater. You should have also seen the Sila plateau and the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Greetings from Cosenza, you are very nice, thank you for your visit... goodbye ❤

No tourists? That's where I want to go. I like places that allow you to experience it the way the locals do.

originally the people who founded Cosenza were called "Bretti", they were divided into tribes. the commander was a woman, called "Donna Bretta". Originally the Bretti were subservient to the Campani (inhabitants of region that has Naples as its capital) and the Campanians were subservient to Rome (obviously). Around 400 BC (about 300 years after the birth of Rome) the people of Bretti rebelled against the Campanians and Rome and fled towards the south. They arrived in the valley of the present city, at the foot of the Pancrazio hill (Cosenza stands on 7 hills like Rome) and, with the agreement of all the tribes, they decided to found the city there(probably also with the "consent" of Rome, which for a long time tried to dominate the Bretti without ever succeeding by force) . The name Cosenza, in fact, derives from the Latin "consentium" which means consent / agreement. The Bretti fought and drove out the Greeks from the area which is currently the province of Cosenza. a huge territory that cuts the north of Calabria in two and overlooks two seas (Ionian and Tyrrhenian). The Bretti rebelled against Rome several times, to the point that the emperor contemptuously distorted the name from Bretti to "Brutii" which means warlike, irascible, rebellious, in fact the Bretti also rebelled against Hannibal. Since then the name slowly changed from Bruti to "Bruzi", the "T" became "Z" over time (as in the typical Latin pronunciation). Today Cosenza is known as the city of the Bruzi. But Cosenza is also famous for being the birthplace of the philosopher and naturalist Bernardino Telesio, whose doctrine inspired other great philosophers such as Giordano Bruno, Descartes, Bacon... who we can consider a bit like his disciples. ;)

the less (Or none) tourists, the better. Nothing beats being off the beaten track. Thanks for this tour of Cosenza. I have never been to anywhere south of Salerno. I have been all over Sicily a few times.
