This is not a huge problem in other cultures with other languages, like Japanese, where names have meanings that are related to the Kanjis they are spelled with. Usually people explain how their name is written and therefore you can understand the meaning of their name, making it easier to remember.

I can relate to the second part so much. I work as a touring technician for a theater show, and we are at a new place every day, working with new people. Although you introduce yourself in the morning, because there are a lot of people you quickly forgot them. Also if you finally remember them at the end of the day its useless because the next day there will be new names to remember.
