How to Study So You Never Forget

A good way to understand things is by trying to explain them to yourself. When you find it difficult to explain a concept you SHOULD BE understanding, it's usually a sign that you skipped some important part when you learned it the first time. It's also a good way to instantly discover gaps in your knowledge. And more often than not, the benefit of these discoveries are transferable, meaning you will be able to see other problems clearer, because you just came to a better understanding of a concept that is fundamental to several areas of knowledge.

tl;dr - When you're learning something new, just because what you're learning makes sense doesn't mean that it's internalized or that you can regurgitate it when needed. Thinking that seeing something and it making sense in the moment is getting a topic down is an 'illusion of confidence.' Therefore, you need to employ 'recall' techniques that involve reviewing the information, immediately looking away from the information, and then recall/recreate all you've just learned the best you can.
