Hip Extension Gluteus Maximus This may also be one of the most important tests. This is a test that assesses the neuromuscular control of the gluteus maximus, one of the most important muscles in your body. This muscle is used heavily in all activities that require upright movement especially in running and jumping or even more importantly landing from a jump. Chronic sitting causes decreased neuromuscular control in this muscle and many problems of the back and lower extremity are associated with weakness in this muscle. Many people are very tight in their hip flexor muscles causing decreased neuromuscular control of the gluteus maximus. The hip flexors oppose the movement of hip extension which the gluteus maximus is primarily responsible for. If you do not pass this test activities involving plyometrics, running and squatting should be approached with caution. Decreased Neuromuscular control of this muscle can lead to
• Low back pain
• Hip Impingement Syndrome
• Hamstring and Hip Flexor Strains
• Lumbar Spine, Hip, and knee Osteoarthritis
• Knee ligament and cartilage injuries
• Anterior Knee Pain
• Achilles Tendon problems
• Limitations in Athletic Performance
