Hip Abduction Manual Muscle Test This may also be one of the most important tests, especially for knee injuries. This is a test that assesses the neuromuscular control of the gluteus medius. This muscle is used heavily in all activities that require upright movement especially in running and jumping or even more importantly landing from a jump. In primates this muscle is usually more posterior because of the shape of the pelvis and causes them to lurch side to side with poor lateral hip stabilization from this muscle. In Humans, the pelvis is more lateral and allows for less trunk lean and sway during upright activities such as walking and running. This is one of the reasons we are such effective bipedal runners. This muscle helps to control rotation of the hip and therefore knee during walking, running and landing from a jump. If you do not pass this test activities involving plyometrics, running and squatting should be approached with caution. Decreased Neuromuscular control of this muscle can lead to
• ACL Injuries
• Low back pain
• Hip Impingement Syndrome
• ITB Syndrome
• Hamstring and Hip Flexor Strains
• Lumbar Spine, Hip, and knee Osteoarthritis
• Knee ligament and cartilage injuries
• Anterior Knee Pain
• Patella tendonitis
• Patella Instability
• Lateral Ankle Sprains
• Achilles Tendon problems
• Limitations in Athletic Performance

I really don't see this as a good assessment. It's possible that the TFL could be overactive and holding the leg up instead of the glute medius? Am I right?

If i dont have some1 to do this with, would using weight instead still be an accurate test?

Sorry, I don't see how this is a "self"-assessment.
