This game was groundbreaking back when it came out. Just being able to run around a fully open 3D world that was so big and be able to do whatever I wanted was just mindblowing. Wasted a good many a days trying to survive as long as possible through 5 star wanted levels.

Fun fact: Original gta 3 was even more graphic. There was a dismemberment system.(you could see body parts on the street after explosions) In definitive edition they took it out.

I remember when it came out, and yes, it deserves its praise. The first top-down GTA was good fun, and GTA London or whatever was a fun sequel too. But This really was a generational leap forward, for both GTA and open worlds, still in their infancy then. This was played to death at the time...

I remember trying this one out when I was like 18 and I remember this game being difficult and kind of hard to control!
(This was on the original PS2 so that kind of make sense!)

But I do have to give the people at rockstar props to revolutionize the “open world” genre without this we wouldn’t of have saints row!

8:22 What's funny is that the original game, excluding the enhanced original Xbox version, they could explode into chunks since the way the bodies are modeled, which are basically in chunks, like Mario's model in Mario 64.

I havent played GTA3 in years, this makes me wanna go fire up my PS2. I was like 13 when gta3 came out, I remember it being the greatest thing ever for a couple years until Vice City dropped, then Vice City being the greatest thing ever until San Andreas. The good ole days, when RockStar actually tried.

The best part of the whole game was the radio channels. On the PC version you were able to take the mp3 files out of the game folder and listen to them outside of the game. The "Chatterbox" was funny as hell.

My favorite thing to do in the original 3 was what I'd like to call "Car fishing". I'd take a car to the bomb place and have them install one. Then I'd find someone who hijacks and wait. As they go to hijack get out the car and they'll get in activating the bomb. They will drive like a block before exploding.
