This idea is the one thing I wish I learned in my 20’s. You let go of any delusions of perfection and I know I’ve become way more empathetic when discussing ideas because even the best plan or idea will end up harming someone at scale.

“There are no solutions, there are only trade-offs; and you try to get the best trade-off you can get, that's all you can hope for. We cannot achieve a perfect outcome”

A quote from Thomas Sowell.

100%. Time continues all the time and we can trade spending it poorly with spending it wisely. Either perpetuate problems, or perpetuate solutions.

As an engineer, sometimes you get lucky and a 99.9% solution without trade-offs appears… but its rare and requires gratitude when you see it.

Motivation-speak (including Jocko's) usually sounds to me like a word salad of platitudes that does nothing. But frankly, this is somehow exactly what I needed to hear right now, dealing with some regrets in life

I definitely agree!! ☝🏼24/7/365 N:0w….(I have to do the skills CBT/ DBT/ Etc….) the VERY second I wake up (PMA- Positive Mental Attitude/ Self Reflection)or I get off alignment and that's when my chemical imbalance kicks in and there's a chance I could have a manic episode… So My tools have to be on point EVERY FUCKIN MOMENT💚 today I am 14 months and 25 days sober from alcohol and meth and I’m a 42-year-old male in Southern California, Married nine years and have a wild story, and I now share with others and help others move forward that don’t have the tools at the moment… We love you all💚

1. There are things we can control in life and things we can’t.
2. Bad things happen to good people.
3. Despite all our good planning, bad things can hit us like a meteor out of the sky.
4. Then we have to choose our attitude & response.
5. Proactive & Reactive.
6. Is the concept of “Trade-offs” synonymous with “Choice”?
7. Where do foundational core beliefs fit in?

If you are doing something that adds zero value. Stopping is the perfect solution.

Aren’t solutions GOOD trade offs and problems BAD ones then?

Simply put: The concept of 'perfection' is the (insert favourite insult here) hope that leads to the blind, and closing, alley invention of religions. Science OTOH creeps forward one nerd at a time, and from one metastudy to a metametastudy in expansionist mode. That the development of _Homo sapiens_ is just a biological/historical accident with no meaning except... the cute-ish anthropomorphic question: _are Intelligence and Imagination the Cosmos trying to make sense of itself?_
Cute to me anyway. A by-product of the logic of the Cosmos can try to become a Master. Why not?

Richard Branson is probably the only person who disagrees.

Using the utopian Christopher Hitchens to support the idea of trade offs is a bit rich.
