How to resolve issue where unused RAM slot will not recognize RAM

I hear about this frequently. The computer did not have RAM in the slot from the factory, and when someone tries to add RAM, it does not recognize it. This is an easy fix in most cases.

This. This is what worked for me. A 2 minute video....so simple yet so important. Went through all the technical stuff, BIOS and all that yet it was this simple. Thank you!

I was surprised that this works! Usually you don't want to wiggle components but this is a clear example of why it can work.

I'm so happy this actually worked on my laptop. Thank you!
The key is to slightly wiggle the RAM stick up and down (at a 30° or 40° angle) until you feel the RAM slide into a 40° angle space inside the slot because an unused slot has a tight space and simply pushing the RAM in won't work.
I've searched, read and tried so many advices that I've come across Google and nothing worked. I almost gave up.
Thank you for sharing this -- the simplest solution I found and yet it's the one that fixed the problem.
God bless you.

I bought a refurbished HP computer for my wife that had 4 GB of RAM in Slot 2 and an empty Slot 1. I bought a second stick of 4 GB and installed it in the empty Slot 1. The computer did not see the additional RAM. I then removed the new RAM from Slot 1, moved to old RAM from Slot 2 and put it in Slot 1, and put the new RAM in Slot 2. Once again the computer recognized only 4 GB of RAM, the new stick in Slot 2. So I thought maybe Slot 1 was bad. Then I found this video. I worked the old RAM in and out of Slot 1 several times (about 5 times) and did the complete insert and remove several times. Then I booted up the computer. All 8 GB of RAM is now recognized. What a simple and unexpected fix.

Just for information, I used CPU-Z to check the slots and RAM. Both it and the system were reporting only 4 GB, however, the CPU-Z identified the slot in which RAM was recognized. At the end, CPU-Z recognized all 8 GB of RAM. Just another diagnostic tool.

After giving my all hope and try and failed to put 2nd ram on 2nd slot.. it didn't recognised..
I pray lot to God 🙏. Then I find this video 😌😌
This video save my self confidence to put ram without expert... And I succeeded..

Now I can explain my point of view.
The real problem when a laptop manufacturing and give one Ram, extra ram slot doesn't work for long time. That's why slot become kinda hard..
You need to do the trick what in this video explaining..
Just remember take a look on previous ram in attachment mode and push your new ram on 2nd slot until attach pin doesn't come upto ram's small side hole...
Cheers.. successfully work on 2020 from india 🥰

Thank you for insisting to reseat the RAM if it doesn't recognize. I upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad L430 from 4GB to 2 x 8GB and many sites emphatically state the this machine only recognizes 8GB max while others say it will easily see 16GB. My machine had the 4GB under the keyboard and none in the bottom. I figured I would try to see if I could get it to see 16 and bought a 2 x 8GB kit on Amazon. . After installation of both, system saw only 8GB. To test, I removed the bottom stick to see if it still saw the 8GB in the top and on start up it beeped and black screened. I lifted the keyboard out and reseated the stick several times (click in-click out-click in like you suggested) put it all back to gather and WHAM! 16 GB.... THANKS!

THANK YOU, MAN! Wooah, for a second I thought my case was "special" and nothing could be done... How freakin' wrong I was! Upgraded my HP Omen 15 2018 from 8 Gb to 16 Gb and it was all down to a bad collocation. It has to be 45 degrees and fit deeply. What a glorious day!

Dammit!!! now I have to open my laptop again

This worked for me. It is imperative that the RAM is inserted at an angle (30°―45°)
If it is not, that means the RAM needs to be eased into the slot. Try pushing only a teensy bit harder at an angle and the chip has to ease in at an angle. Not horizontally parallel to the laptop.

Awesome sir! This technique helped me upgrade just now. Had tried upgrading my laptop two years ago and I failed. Didn't know this technique back then. Thank you so much!

It simply did the trick. The computer was recognizing only 8 out of 16gb.. Thank you so much

I confirm!!! it works, even if sounds childish. Make sure you remove the battery and RAM is fully driven to slot. I saw that my RAM was very slightly not fully in, like, 1 mm.

Brilliant. Simple and effective fix for something I thought was worse than it was. Just work the memory sticks into the slots a few times and it seats them nicely!!!

I can't believe how ridiculous yet how effective this

Another success story of this method
I thought the second slot of my Dell Inspiron n4110 wasn't I tried this method and it worked wonders

A word of suggestion and an extra step is that if you have a small blower that you use for removing dust from camera lens and a soft brush (I used my Carl Zeiss lens cleaner kit brush and blower). I used the blower for about a minute trying to remove dust and stuff then brushed the second ram slot I tried this method....and when I restarted the system IT WORKED.

Thanks again for this🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
