Babe wake up! New GCFungus tutorial just dropped

Oxyferns visually look nice to me. I keep them around for natural looking aesthetics, which has no function other than my own satisfaction. I always forget dupes hate how they look for some odd reason. It's a shame, really. There aren't very many redeeming factors for them, especially since it's hard to get enough of them to matter. I want to love Oxyferns so bad.

Anyway, great video as always!

Fun fact! Ferns in Swedish translates to "snake-bowl" (orm-bunke)

I recently moved 2 dupes onto the resin tree planetoid to clear it up and build a shipping system, and chose these as the O2 source. Nice to have a compact, heat-free oxygen production and CO2 disposal which only needs a bit of imported solids (much less hassle than liquids) to keep running.

Thank you for the upload, forest starts can be interesting. Any chance of you making a tutorial bite for rocket interiors? I spent hours rearranging and I still feel like I could be using the space better.

Interestingly, Forest start has a fair amount of polluted water but not a lot of sand. When I was playing this map I made a few open pits of polluted water for the polluted oxygen it produces to bridge the gap between oxygen ferns and a functioning SPOM.

i never pass on an oxyfern seed at any point. the cool oxygen and efficiency i keep for late game, plus they are useful for the other asteroids, outside of the starter one.

I often start at radioactive ocean asteroid and don't even bother with these. When I can pump water I just pump it right into an electrolyzer and dig some space above the base for the hydrogen. I think these need a buff, maybe use salt water instead or something.

Oxyferns is an early game O2 and CO2 solution. Due to its low effectiveness and medicore efficiency, it is going to be obsolete in mid game where the more effective and efficient SPOM is built and CO2 is no longer a waste product.

The in-game database effectively states, in recipes for O2 or recipes from CO2, H2O, dirt, that oxyferns produce 18.8kg/cycle of oxygen, which is the number you (and many others) based your calculations off of.
However, if you look at the "effects" section of a planted oxyfern's "status" tab, it states 31.25g/s O2, which translates to 18.750kg/cycle O2 (note how it would round to 18.8kg/cycle), or exactly 1/3.2 the consumption of a dupe. In other words, according to this value, oxyferns convert CO2 to O2 at exactly the same ratio dupes do the opposite.
Also, Klei devs aren't THAT sadist that they would create a plant with a neat 16/5 ratio for CO2 consumption but an atrocious 150/47 forO2. Even Satan wouldn't do that.
Besides, even if the database numbers were exact, assuming a 16 oxyferns - 5 dupes setup, you would overproduce 800g O2/cycle, which would translate to ridiculously low pressure increase as this would be spread out across the base.

What about oxyfern usage in rockets? can they efficiently pick up Co2 at the bottom of the rocket despite being planted in a planter?

I love watching good tutorial vids of games I love. That "Dirt" cost is nothing when you use Abor trees and my favorite critter. The PIP!
Tho to be honest, since I use oxyferns so rarely I forgot they even had a Dirt Cost per day XD

Pardon my dumb question if I may; When you say the plants are 4 times more effective when domestic, does that mean faster to produce or just makes more oxygen compared to wild ones?
In a game im running I got this feeling that wild and domestic ones produce at diffrent speeds/rates.

These are a nice early game way to remove CO2.

Oxyferns are great at stopping polluted water from offgassing early on.
One more thing that I should probably mention is that duplicant CO2 is not enough to sustain them. It's one of the times when the wood burner is crucial for your survival in the early game, so don't stay on hamster wheels for too long. XD
