The head of US insurance company UnitedHealthcare has been gunned down in New York City.

Chief executive Brian Thompson was fatally shot in the chest just before 07:00 EST (midday GMT) on Wednesday outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where he had been scheduled to speak at an investor conference later in the day.

The 50-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

A suspect fled the scene and remains at large, the New York Police Department said.

That bullet wound was a pre existing condition.
Claim denied.

How many deaths did he cause due to his greed? We will never know.

Some grieving spouse or parent taking revenge for refused medical care I assume.

I've not read a single comment expressing sympathy. I think our American friends are tired of being fleeced then denied coverage by their health insurance companies.

Probably a grieving parent or the victim of the cruelness of those American insurance companies.... People are starting to fight back everywhere

He apparently had a salary of $22 million USD and voted himself a chunky increase/bonus last year. Meanwhile, a customer was likely denied a significant medical claim for his family member with a devastating illness and decided to file his complaint with this CEO.

I worked in an area of hospital billing. United Healthcare was the worst insurance ever. Constantly denying valid claims. A relative of mine with a severe stroke, intubated in the ICU had her claim denied, it took the hospital 6 months to fight the denial until UHC paid up. I wonder if this shooter was a patient who got denied care, or a relative of a patient. I also don’t know why AARP endorses this company. I wonder why the government does not investigate this company

Not much sympathy in these comments. Could it be because CEO's commit legalized theft with their enormous pay often while they're damaging the company, reducing benefits and laying off workers?

Geez, narrowing down the suspect list is going to be difficult.

I bet you a denied claim resulted in the shooter's wife or kid dying.

I hope insurance companies are reading these comments. People are pissed.

For-profit health insurance companies should not exist. Think about it. The more they deny claims, the more money they would make. That's a bad incentive right there.

Be thankful for the NHS where doctors decide what treatment you get not insurance clerks
