5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Joining FAANG!

👨🏻‍🎓 Having been in the "corporate life" for the past 7 years, I recently looked back at some of the mistakes, learnings, and takeaways from this period of my life and in this video, I share the 5 Lessons from the First Years of My Career!

First, I learned how to quickly build credibility with colleagues even when I had relatively little work experience. I also observed colleagues who seemed to be able to influence others effectively even when they didn't hold a senior job title.

I have also regularly come across terms such as "visibility," "presence," and "exposure" and they're often associated with job promotions and salary raises, yet many young professionals (myself included) have a misconception as to HOW we should go about becoming more visible in the workplace.

Burnout is also a very real issue nowadays so how should we go about saying "no" to others (especially senior stakeholders) without inadvertently damaging a work relationship?

Finally, I share a bad habit I picked up in college: assuming all networking events needed to have a purpose - to benefit me. When in reality keeping an open mind and being genuinely curious about others' work may open doors you never even considered of previously!

Man, this guy is the best.... I still don't understand the YT algorithm, it doesn't even recommend me his channel, no wonder he is still at 52K whereas he deserves to be at 1 M Jeff, why don't you just write to Susan, I am pretty sure she would do something :)

These are all fantastic tips Jeff. I would add that asking questions, especially to senior leaders, can help with visibility. When you ask questions to those people, it shows interest in what they do, it makes them feel "special" or "important" (which people generally love), and more importantly, it makes you look like an employee who is proactive and wants to advance in their career. I wish I had have asked more questions when I was first starting in corporate. I think it's an underrated way of standing out.

I like your suggestion of offering alternative solutions /support - so obvious but I never do that 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

In this video, you proved there is always an elegant way to reply to others, which will create a relationship based on respect and interdependence. Thank you, Jeff, for sharing your inspiring experience :)

Thanks Jeff! My workplace often feels a little toxic, but this helps me have a better perspective of why some of the things happen that are happening. It's a small shop that presents itself as corporate, and the company owner did some consulting work. Your video is helping me keep perspective, as neither of my parents had corporate experience.

Brilliant (6 years into my working life...but still). Thank you, Jeff!

In the "Networking with an open mind" segment you mentioned that a person can shut themselves off to a new and potentially better opportunity. It 100% reminded me of Chris Voss's piece of advice from his book "Never Split the Difference", "Don't be so sure of what you want that you wouldn't take something better." I don't know if you've read that book, or heard/watched him speak (he has a Ted Talk), but what a great point.

However... I did fail to do all of the above you said in this video during my initial days.... learned them all the harder way...

But 10 years later....now I own a company...and I have an awesome work environment and a happy work family.

So inspiring and really actionable! Wonder how many people you manage to maintain a regular coffee chat :) As an introvert, I often feel it's quite draining to meet new people...

1:27 Jeff x Ali Abdaal, yes that collab would be epic! Binge watching another Jeff Su's video. Constructive persuasion is definitely a great lesson, being considerate and lowering the barrier to participate would definitely convey a big positive vibe. Wow, that's a great way to constructively say no by providing support/recommendation to point them in the right direction to resolve the issue.
