A study from earlier this year has sparked conversations about Boston’s appeal to young people - and if city officials are doing enough to keep them here.

No shit it's too expensive. Ppl that make $70k shouldn't struggle to pay bills. The prices of everything is ridiculous.

The affordability issue is due to Boston's economy revolving around healthcare, higher education, financial services and tech sales which are all high-paying. Landlords and property owners selling know this and can charge such high prices because those people have more available income to spend on housing. Also doesn't help that Boston is 400 years old and relatively small/already built up, which makes constructing more housing supply extremely expensive, meaning any new housing is for expensive "luxury" properties so developers can make their money back.

Thank the landlords, thank the realtors and boomers for the affordability crisis

1:05 "What is the city doing ..?" Nothing beyond meaningless talk from Mayor Wu and her office.

I’m fortunate enough to be living with my parents but I’m not eating everyday. The young people who were single handedly paying to live here were already forced out a long time ago, the situation for young people is much worse than people are making it out to be. We’re looking for money for food and basics now, housing became unobtainable years ago and nobody spoke up about it until now.

Same thing in LA. Even the crappy places are ridiculously expensive.

She complaining about Mission Hill. They got no idea Mission Hill used to be a community that housed local life long residents. It got expensive when the city brought in all these younger transient residents and college grads and how the whole area has to change just to cater to them…..

lol, same old headlines as usual. nothing much will change. cities like boston and the surrounding metro will still be congested, the next generation of people will move in to fill the vacancies, and the show will keep on going. bet.

I know they use the Trader Joe's soundbyte to make these kids sound like snowflakes, but if you want to go to a more affordable market like Market Basket you have to travel outside of the city which generally means having a car, paying for parking, etc.. - The universities bring these kids in, they buy up the housing, they contribute to crowding and congestion, and many are tax exempt with massive endowments. It's time some pay their fair share to help build out the public infrastructure they completely rely on for their business models to work.
