Most living expenses have gone up in price since 1980 (even when you adjust for inflation). That includes cars, homes, education – almost everything, except for our paychecks. Here's why paying for a house, a car and a college degree was possible in 1980 – but not so much today.

No waitress could afford a house payment, car payment and college tuition in the 80's, or at any other time. That's complete nonsense. Back then, you had double-digit interest rates on homes, and you couldn't buy one without close to 20% down. Cars you could only finance 3-4 years, max. Double-digit rates for those, too. Everything was cheaper, but avg household income was also FAR less. Less than 30k until about 1986. Avg household income is over 100k now. No waitress was making that much back then.
No, a waitress or waiter putting themselves through school drove the same car their parents gave them in HS, or a $500 beater, shared an apartment with 2 other people, and scrapped and scrounged to pay for school. Ate ramen and other super cheap food.
Same as you can do now. People just refuse to deprive themselves of things today...now they have to have a fancy phone, Netflix, Amazon, nicer car, go out to eat and drink all the time, are fat as a result, and then complain that they can't afford things like their parents could back in the day.

While conveniently ignoring all the differences, or acknowledging that their parents who did that, did it by just barely hanging on, and working multiple jobs instead of going out for Starbucks.
