Taiwan's foreign minister, Joseph Wu, has said he believes China is now "more likely" to invade Taiwan to distract from leader Xi Jinping's domestic problems.

Mr Wu acknowledged that "the situation in the last year compared to the two previous years is much worse" but said that "to me, 2027 is the year that we need to watch out for".

Yeah, so triple your military budget. If they are so worried why do they only nominally increase their military budget?

Don’t fool yourself. The reality of international politics is power politics. Qing Dynasty lost HK to Britain, Taiwan to Japan due to military defeat. Japan lost Taiwan to ROC after WW2, due to military defeat. Britain lost HK to PRC due to military weakness.

Similarly, Taiwan/ROC would lose its de facto independence due to military weakness or military defeat. That’s just human history. The island is militarily indefensible and economically too dependent. No outside help would change those facts. Hence, Ukraine may have a better chance of survival despite being destroyed, whereas Taiwan is doomed despite being prosperous and peaceful. That’s just reality and why nobody recognizes Taiwan in the first place.

Taiwan's foreign minister, Joseph Wu, is a very intelligent and excellent diplomat. Freedom AND peace has the same value for him. Hopefully China will understand that keeping peace will bring more peace and prosperity for the Chinese people.

Instead of insisting the illegal claim and threat of war, China will look good if they recommend Taiwan to restore the seat in the UN for formal country.

How did China invade China's own land?
ISO code 158:Taiwan, Province of China。

This was what Zalensky was made to predict in 2021. Now he and his fellow ministers got richer but the whole country is so devastated that the citizens would take another at least 30 to rebuild back.

They need to mine the waters.
A passive defense. Actively shooting at planes and ships is a huge escalation, but putting mines in your own water is fair game.

They should be training at least half of their civilian population as a effective resistance.

Had China just recognized the sovereignty of Taiwan and bought the under their sphere of influence, Taiwan would not have seek out relations with the west. Similarly, if Russia wasn't bullying neighbors, countries wouldn't seek NATO protection.

I also believe invasion is inevitable. Xi Jiping needs to show some accomplishment during his reign. I've seen this philosophy implemented by CEOs.

This is like a Chicken and Egg question, who did what first. Taiwan's ruling party, People's Progressive Party has been pushing vigorously toward independence with the assistance of the US and Japan. China will never let Taiwan become independent. Therefore the conflict is becoming more eminent.

🇹🇼 Surely, as with *every* place and people in the world, this thing between China and Taiwan is all about self-determination. In a Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation poll conducted in June 2020, 54% of respondents supported de jure independence for Taiwan, 23.4% preferred maintaining the status quo, 12.5% favored unification with China, and 10% did not hold any particular view on the matter. As with a goodly majority of Ukrainians who want absolutely nothing to do with Russia, it seems an equally substantial majority of Taiwanese want the Chinese to stay the hell out of their business. 🇨🇳
