How do you evacuate when the storm spans 6+ states in size?

Asheville, NC resident here. Yes, it's really as bad as it looks. No power, no cell service, no wifi, no water, no road access in or out for an enormous amount of people. Fortunately I live off one of very few roads in the county that maintained power. Our water is out though. Authorities say will be weeks before power and water is fully back. I drove around after the storm and some water had receded. Absolutely devastating. FEMA, National Guard, agencies from 19 states, even Canadian services vehicles are here trying to help. Thank you to those who risk their lives daily to save others in this catastrophe no one imagined possible in our beautiful mountain city.😢

I'm in Western North Carolina, and while it was "just a tropical storm" when it hit us, it hit as we were already having flood problems. About a day and a half of heavy rain fell before the storm hit here. The French Broad River, that run near my house hit it's crest. It was 10 feet above the record flood level set in like the late 1800's. A little town not to far away, Chimney Rock Village, is just gone. I lived in Lakeland, Florida and I haven't seen this level of destruction since Hurricane Charlie in 2004. I've taken in one elderly lady and a family next door because their houses are just to unsafe to live in right now. Luckily I did live in Florida for nearly 30 years so I was prepared, but now my supplies have to support more people then I had planned. While it has been stressful, it hasn't been without a few funny moments. The only store with power couldn't rely on it's computers to ring up purchases, and the young cashiers didn't know how to count change without the computers. All of the older people has to work the registers. Also, we found a van with Florida plates in the parking lot. Stay safe and if you're inclined pray for us.

It’s very bad where my son lives in NC. His gf and also one of his friends have lost almost everything and their buildings are going to have to be demolished. Goods were flowing out of the doors at Walmart and people were looting. They were also looting homes. There is a 7 pm curfew. The Wi-Fi is down, cell phones are down, and a lot of people don’t have power. They have been told to boil water before consuming it, etc. Churches are giving out free cases of water. The Red Cross has been dropping packages from the air to people who can’t get out of their homes. Some of the bridges and roads have collapsed and sink holes have formed. There have been some big mudslides. Things are a mess!

It’s strange how Charlotte was largely spared. I was playing tennis Thursday afternoon. It was hot and sunny out!
