Should I Become A Driving Instructor UK

If you are asking yourself if you should become a driving instructor I'm going to help you answer that question and hopefully share some truths about what the career and training involve. Now I will be honest driving instructors do not lead the most glamorous of working lives. We do however meet lots of amazing people and we help improve peoples lives and open massive doors by helping them get on the road. After all who doesn't remember their first driving instructor?
Here are some common questions that i'll answer.

What does the driving instructor training consist of?
I can spend a while explaining this but I'm going to put it as short as possible. There are 3 parts.
Part 1- A theory test approximately £81
Part 2 - Advanced driving test 1 hour Approximately £111
Note- After passing part 2 you are now able to apply for a pink badge as a PDI allowing you to begin charging for driving lessons to help cover some of the costs of training and continue to learn on the job.
Part 3 - ADI driving test, this will involve you taking a student for a driving lesson with an examiner sitting in the back and watching essentially. At the end they will then give you feedback and decide whether the lesson was to the required competency of a ADI. (Approved Driving Instructor) £111

How much does driving instructor training cost?
The will vary massively depending on the person because after all you only have three attempts at the final test so its often better to get too much training rather than not enough. This does however come with a cost. You will likely see company's offering training for £1500 or maybe less but this will not cover your training as a driving instructor and you will be required to fork out more in the long run so my advice would be to avoid these upfront offers. The cost of training will likely be between £2000 and £3000 but do not forget you will have a 6 month window of opportunity to learn on the job with a pink badge after passing your part 2 also allowing you to earn money towards this training.

How much does a driving instructor earn?
I've covered this in loads of other videos but they earn as much as you work. A comfortable day 9am-3pm Monday to Friday before any expenses and perfect diary management could see you earning between £30000 and £38000.

How do I get pedals in my car?
This is actually a very easy job and can be in any car. There are plenty of people that specialise in fitting these pedals and will happily meet you at work and fit them there. They cost around £450.

Is the market over crowded for driving instructors?
At the moment there is no crowding as we all have full diary's. After all the number of people requiring driving lessons is only going up while the number of driving instructors will retire especially around these confusing times.

Final Notes:
Being a driving instructor has been a life changing opportunity for me allowing me to work and manage my own life on my own terms. I will be glad if I can continue to do this until the day I retire.

Great video Josh. If you don’t mind me asking what do you recommend regarding a car for tuition. Your own car or rent one? What is the rough costs. If you use your own car is the insurance expensive etc.

Liked the video. I currently work for Royal Mail as a postie and im sure you're aware of what is going on there with the strikes and job security. Im coming up 50 next month and being fairly unskilled my options are becoming limited. My current wage is around £20k and im getting sick of working for bullying bosses. Like you I want to be in control of my life and would be happy to earn (after expenses) something around £25-30k eventually on around 35hrs teaching time? . Is this achievable without doing all hours god sends? I do realise I wouldnt start off with this type of money.

Hi Josh. It's true that you always remember the instructor! I have two categories and I have always changed instructor once. In my experience there are two types of instructors. 1) wrong type for me - they lecture everything with a serious face like a minesweeper and physics lecturer / head of the sect 🤣 2) Helpful with advice but without exaggeration and with some distance hello ultimately it's just driving a vehicle, thus giving a positive impact on learning. I think you're type 2. I'm thinking about becoming an instructor...but if my introverted nature won't be a big obstacle...I'm not as cool a talker as you are 😎
