As an alternative to ice, you can also use wet sand.

You can bend the copper efficiently, if you fill with beach sand the copper pipe.

Surely in a 'grid down' situation, your not going to find a working freezer

What was that device that Scott put the coil into?

Worked in a welding shop you can put cable or wire and even rope inside the tube and it won't kink ( pick the right size ) .

You can pack the coil with wet sand or clay and achieve similar results, no refrigeration necessary. Also, in most scenarios where this would be necessary or at least beneficial, you can scavenge the coil from just about any electric hot water heater.

I think the point was to fill it with something. It doesn't have to be ice it could be filled with sand or some other media.

surely if you were really "prepping" you would bend the copper coil in advance, not just take it to the half way freezing stage

I wish I'd known that ice trick before making my twin coil immersion chiller for brewing.

Assuming you want to bend copper coils without ice (grid down or don't want to wait for the water in the tubing to freeze) just fill the tubing with the finest sand you can find, then bend it.

That's interesting, now I'm curious! Do you have any evidence to support your claim?

You can actually make ice with Fertilizer and water. There's a few videos around you can watch to see what I'm talking about. Also, I have never seen tubing bent this way, but I do think having it full of ice would be easier than any other gelatinous material because you dont have to worry about keeping it contained.

How to freeze water without electricity.
1. Take a large container and fill it with manure. Place in shade.
2. Seal off both ends of the copper tube and bury the tube in the manure, leaving both ends out of manure for sanitary purposes.
3. Wait several hours and check.

The manure extracts the heat from the water since copper is a metal, and metals are excellent conductors. This can also be done with containers like pots or buckets as long as the container that is holding the water is metal.

That's why they're called "preppers". They don't wait until the dangerous situation to be ready.

You can loop that tube without the ice in it. Just not with your hands, but around a log or something.

Thanks. In a grid down situation, I'll tie my rivals to a lamp post with a copper coil while enjoying the hot water that runs through it.

Wait, but to do that when there is no electricity, grid down, you need to to freeze a coil with water in it to make ice inside the coil... in a freezer... that is run by electricity.
