Important to let folks know, if you are rehydrating due to heat stroke, you want to leave out the sugar. Its a fuel, and your body doesn't need that in a heat related situation. This info comes from my instructor during a Wilderness Medical Aid certification course.

I have also heard that it's a bad idea for someone who's dehydrated to try to re-hydrate all at once. Same for someone starving to eat a bunch of food.

You stock up on them now so that you have the supplies you will need when they are no longer available in the stores

Other than lots of salt, I doubt that I would have baking soda, sugar, or "salt substitute" anywhere near me during the after-apocalypse. What the fuck is a salt substitute? First time I'm hearing of it.

yup they could've explained a little more there. This is only for when you are close to dying of thirst. The reason for these added minerals is to avoid the celular diffusion. Basically if you were dying of thirst and then drank 2 litres of water you might die, because your cells explode. Worst case scenario ofc.

fluid and electrolytes, fluid and electrolytes, fluid and electrolytes. IV solution is basically salt and water, not too MUCH or too LESS salt, 0.45% NaCl or 0.90% NaCl to be exact.

This wouldn't work if you have a stomach virus or food poisoning. I still dont understand why water and little bit of salt will do the trick.

Doesn't salt dehydrate you further??

I thought that saltwater, especially when dehydrated, was a huge no-no because it draws water out of the body's tissues

you need to replenish electrolytes, not just sodium chloride (salt), but also potassium and citrates. Sea salt is better than refined salt because it contains other minerals besides sodium. A good electrolyte replenishment drink can be made by dissolving 1 tablespoon of tomato paste (provides potassium), 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt, plus the juice of half a lime in a tall glass of water.
