I really emphasize the long run especially the long run workouts. I do 3-5 x 2 mile repeats with a 2-3 min. jog recovery. If I am doing 3 x 2 mile, I do them at 10k pace. If I do 4 x 2 mile, I do them at 15k pace. 5 x 2 mile @ half marathon effort. The next week I do a time based long, easy run. 90-120 minutes is usually what I do. 2-3 short, easy runs during the week then on the weekend is the long run workout. I try not to waste time because I work 50 hr. weeks and have two children. I just do 1 race specific run per week and the rest are easy running just to recover and build that aerobic system. I went from doing 2:20:00 to 2:05:00 doing this type of work. Extending threshold to longer and longer distances is the absolute key and to hold that for a long period of time.

Great video Coach, I'm on week 8 of your 20 week half marathon plan and the structure + intensity of the workouts has pushed me way harder than just running on my own. I'm feeling confident and still got 13 weeks left. If you are new to running or never done a plan before I highly recommend it.

Thank you coach, for your sharing your knowledge! Currently at week 3 of a 18week HM Block. Going for sub 1:20… an enormous task, considering my last half was 1:40 … but i am confident I can get it done.

Hey Nate. Another solid talk! 10k race update: Due to hot weather, changed to 5k 4 days out…went out hard for 2k and the wheels came off big time😏. Body and mind had prepped for so long for 10k pace, so a 2k (pr best!) felt so alien🙃. Taught me a good lesson…Signed up for the 5k in 9 weeks with the fitness gained last 12 weeks. How’s Valencia training going?

If at sometime you could make a video about how to adjust your race strategy off the back of a training block I'd be interested to hear that. Just a video idea 💡
For example Suppose I set targets of running 4:15/km stints in long runs to run a sub3 mara or 90min half, but by the end of the block I realise I could not hit it. I would expect a coach would say dont go for sub3, go for 3hr10 or something. How best do you re calibrate or workout target time or race strategy ?

Hey Coach! I’m on week two of the 16 week half marathon plan. I have a work out related question. If it says three minute recovery between reps I take that to mean easy jog…? But if it says 6 x 1 K with three minutes rest, that would mean standing recovery, correct?
