HOW TO USE LUTS IN VIDEO EDITING

LUT is an acronym for "Look Up Table" - these are used frequently in color grading. These are files you can load in to your editor and apply to your footage to achieve certain looks to your footage - commonly these emulate various film stocks.

I use LUTs somewhat differently. I shoot with four different video cameras, then they are edited together. I shoot an X-Rite color chart then I make a LUT for each camera in Resolve. These LUTs match the cameras so they look the same when I'm editing them together. I don't use a LUT to "create a look" with the type of event shooting I do. Gerry in Calgary.

I wish there was a way to quickly preview each lut, kinda like scrolling through each font when working with text. I look forward to your future video on power grading / using gallery mode. That looks very useful!

A 3 d Lut is an color kurve adjustment. I read a book that recomendet to use shadow/midtone/highlite instead of lift/gama/gain on the primary node before the lut gets applied.

Hi, Ted, Can you make a video about color grading non log footage, for example, how to color grade a Sony a5100 footage with creative style set to portrait -3, -3, -3? Thank you in advance.

How do you keep highlights from soaking color I find most footage also some Hollywood films have orange highlights and blue shadows but it looks off to me. Maybe it's just me learning how to use them, but would gels make it easier applying luts? Also do you have to expose a certain way for a specific lut so that it would fit the style of that lut? So confused lol hope it makes sense.

Hey there, just wondering if 3DL luts are able to work on FCPX? So far, I feel as though 3D Luts are not compatible with Final Cut.
