You don't need to buy that Atomos SATA docking station (11:45). Any USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA converter cable will do. The SSD need not be an expensive 860 pro (10:47). Let me explain: Avid DNxHR HQX 4k60p 4:2:2 bit rate is only 222 MB/s, which is less than half the max sequential write speed of quality TLC NAND drives like Samsung 860 EVO TLC drives (500 MB/s).

I have one of these units, I never thought about the accessories because this is my 5th Atomos recorder. I have all the pieces but anyone for whom this is their first should definitely be aware that you will need some other pieces. I think mentioning the fan is important but I have not had a problem. Heat hasn't been a big problem for me either. I have run it about three hours continuously indoors without a significant problem. I recommend the 1TB WD Blue SSD, it is certified for the Ninja V and it is very reasonably priced. You will need an HDMI 2.0 cable. I found good one for about $15 US. The Atomos HDMI 2.0 cables are stupid expensive. Apparently conventional HDMI cables will work as long as you are not doing 4K 60p; however, I have not tested this. I am extremely pleased with this unit. The build quality is better that previous Atomos products that I have purchased. I feel the price is very fair. The ProRes and Avid codecs are super for capture and editing.

Thanks Craig. I had almost purchased this unit before watching your video and seeing the "extras." The docking station had not even occurred to me.

10:50 I notice that you went with the "EVO" as opposed to the reccomended "PRO". Depending on how long you record for, the EVO can only sustain high write speeds while writing to the CACHE after which the SSD writes to the main memory all internally. You need to maintain power to the drive while it offloads the cache.
The PRO samsung drives can sustain high write speeds for the entire drive.
You can look up the cache size for the different drives but the larger 1 Tetrabyte drive that you got has a larger cache than the 512 Gigglybyte version. I think it is 32 Gigglybyte from memory.

11:20 You can probably purchase a hard drive dock.
I'm a PC guy and own/use the ezDISK EZ0330, $30 on Amazon. I'll bet that these or one of the better-rated HDD docks should surely work. All these docks include USB 3.0 and some also include eSATA (faster I/O). One hitch may be the SSD caddy which may make it tricky to physically insert into the dock, in which case you may want to try a "Sata to USB 3.0 adapter" cable. Disclaimer: I don't own the Atomos.

Great video. I wish there was a little more on loading the LUTs in and showing how that looks in action, and if it was accurate. To me that is maybe the best feature since its very hard to look at Slog and know what you will be getting in post.

Hi Craig. I find that the image of the Ninja V is too warm/orange especially when compared to the GH5 "monitor". Obviously when you watch the footage in the computer it's authentic with the GH5. So, is there any way to match the ninja V image temperature and/or to put it similar to what you get when you see the footage in the computer? Thanks

Yep, those accessories are somewhat of a topic with Atomos. In the beginning of becoming famous, at the time of A7S and still A7SII, they shipped their Shogun and Ninja Flame recorders in hard plastic cases looking like Peli cases. With all thinkable accessories included. Suddenly the case wasnt hard plastic any more and even the accessories got fewer and fewer. But yes, the price dropped too... My Ninja flame got a charging brick for one of the two included batteries and a seperate charging cable for the recorder to plug in while using the device. The docking station, a d-tap cable, sun shield, ... all was included :-)

Good info. SSD drive is redundant, like ATM machine.
Adorama is selling the kit with free batteries and charger.
You can get a much cheaper Sata to USB interface, like $15.

Great Job!!! Thank you for putting this out there. I'm doing to same as the others below, starting my upgrade for my Z6. I appreciate you going into the screen and doing a step by step video, I get mine in a few days. I also wanted to thank some of the comments below, it's all about having the right cables, along with the other equipment if possible for a lower price without messing with quality. Craig, thanks again for your time and for going into the Ninja V. Merry Christmas everyone... 2019

I am considering to purchase a ninja v. One questions, how do you transfer data (recorded video) from SSD to computer? Is this through a cable or certain way?
