Yes, having writer friends is must, sadly I don't have any so lots of my draft are incomplete because I didn't have encouragement by my environment, or any friends if I say " I want to be a author " they say do you have back up plan , which is very discouraging ( i am in college, for your context ) . 😢

I know a few MFAs who know a lot and can generate lovely prose that follows all the rules…but can’t tell a story that holds attention.

Took a creative writing course a year or two ago. It was interesting. Most of the students were using their writing as part of their therapy. They had issues. Me? Just wanted to read and write. Still, it was fun.

RE. Point #1 -- I submitted a short story to a contest. It was modeled after a Greek Tragedy, and had a shocking, sad ending. Both judges responded with, "That turned dark quick!" ZERO understanding of the modality, and ZERO response to the quality (or lack thereof) of the writing. I don't submit to that weekly contest anymore.

I’d rather be naturally talented and create great works that no one reads than to be a conniving hack who sells tons of books.
