In this video I would love to share with you how I remove the dart or minimize the dart in the pattern. I use this method to redirect the dart volume into other parts of the pattern as well as when constructing jacket and shirts. This will help you understand how to work with dart volume and what is the difference in the garment with our without a dart.

New Episodes of "Knit Bodice Block" series every Sunday!

THIS IS how I go about getting rid of a dart or minimizing it.There are other techniques that look different to this one.

3/8" = approx 0.95 cm
1/4" = approx 0.63 cm
1/2" = approx 1.27 cm
1" = approx 2.54 cm

DON'T FORGET TO ADD YOUR SEAM ALLOWANCES :)

Please remember - I am sharing with you my methods and my experience - you can use other methods or whatever gives you the best result. Find what works for you as there are MANY ways how to achieve success in sewing. Happy thoughtful and creative sewing!

I really appreciate that you jump right in with instruction!! Many other people babble and giggle so much before actually showing anything useful. Thanks also for your clear drawing and explanation. I will definitely give these methods a try as I hate the look of bust darts and much prefer garments that drape naturally. Thanks :)

I realized pretty much as soon as you started that this video would not help with what I'm trying to do (make something that was curved with a dart flat, think removing a bust dart so that a vest could fit a man), but I ended up watching the whole thing anyway because it was fascinating and informative right out of the gate, I'll definitely be checking out more of your patterning content

Ooh first! Great tutorial very straight forward and easy to understand. Dart manipulation is a relatively easy skill to master and so powerful too!

Thank you very much. This means you measured and redistributed what you got to different angles of your choice. I hope I am right!

Perfect timing! I have a gaping armhole on a new pattern and don’t want a dart. Yay! ❤️

Thank you for this tutorial. I need to remove bust darts as I have had a double mastectomy and dresses and tops with darts look horrible on me. I am wondering what to do with a sleeve if the armhole has been made bigger, do I add the extra on the side seams of the sleeves or on the cap? Thanks again.

Thank you so much. I am short, heavy and small chested so getting blouses don’t fit me well with darts and the arm holes are always too large. This was very helpful

How do the armscye changes affect your sleeve block? Do you have to adjust it also? Thanks for all of your great tutorials

I don't understand how this works, in theory. That 1.5" dart bulk would have been sewn, decreasing the length of the side seam and overall perimeter. But here, we're taking that amount of dart bulk and distributing it around the pattern without sewing any of it away. Therefore, wouldn't the pattern become 1.5" too big in perimeter?

Thank you. This is concise, helpful and informative. If you add 1/4 to the front armhole, do you alter the front sleeve accordingly or do you simply ease in the extra length? Also, may I add a fifth option of where to rotate the bust dart to? 1/4 to 1/2 could be eased into the sideseam and the dart roof, blended into a curved seam.
