“No Physical Strain” does not mean “Comfortable”! - Anatomical Vocal Training

In Anatomical Vocal Training we work on muscle training through isolated training of the different muscle groups, without any straining (neither the voice box, nor any other part of the body) what so ever. However, that does not mean that all the sounds that we are producing are going to be comfortable. When I say that, I mean the following:
Certain exercises will feel slightly uncomfortable both physically, as well as emotionally. That does not mean that they are harmful to your voice or body, but simply that it can feel very uncomfortable to open up your body to the extent that we do for Anatomical Vocal Training in certain areas of the body.
For instance, if we pull the thyroid cartilage so wide, that it feels like a big hollow ton with a lot of air in the sound, for many people that can be both a bodily feeling that is very uncomfortable, as well as make them emotionally uncomfortable.
However, it is of utmost importance to gently settle into this discomfort, so that the body can gently get used to this new way of opening up softly. That does not make it any less uncomfortable, but it will help the body accept this feeling of wide openness as a new norm that it can always (re-)produce.
The slight discomfort is however essential for the growth of the voice, both physically as well as emotionally.
In this video I'll explain why this discomfort is crucial for both physical and emotional vocal development. Let’s dive into how to get used to a big voice and navigate through vocal crises with patience and persistence.
