Featuring the Grand Seiko SBGH269 and the Omega Seamaster Aquaterra - two of my favorite daily wears.

*Correction: Not all Grand Seiko watch movements beat at 36000 BPH. Many of the modern automatics do but older and manualwind movements do not

Seeing these two watches next to each other just feels right.

Cool matchup. Both have amazing movements. I think where Omega beats Grand Seiko is in the bracelet/clasp. GS really needs to improve their clasps.

The GS has the novelty of being hand finished (partially) and hand assembled.

Def the omega for me, I have the grey dial and it's an amazing watch

I agree that the GS SBGH269 isn’t a “one watch collection” sort of watch. I own one as part of a (presently) 5-Watch collection and it adds a LOT to it. The limited-edition status and desirability of the piece also ensures decent residuals. But it’s not a “one watch collection:” too niche and weird. I wear it whenever I wear any red. Otherwise, it just doesn’t match.

That said, I don’t think that omega is “one watch collection” material either. It’s close in terms of appearance, but not in terms of quality or value. I think I’d go with a Rolex Datejust (smooth bezel, oyster bracelet, rhodium or black dial with batons) or a GS Snowflake SBGA211 for the one watch I could wear all the time with just about anything. Only problem I have with the Rolex is that I can’t see my movement.

wait wasn't Credor Seiko above Grand Seiko still?

Credor is a bit higher horology to some. Credor has the premium movements and are usually much thinner cases than GS equivalents. I also have both those watches (my Omega AT is the golf version). They are both a great value. However, the AT is more versatile with luminous hands & indices and quick-set hours for travel. Both have impressive movements - Hi Beat for GS and George Daniel's co-axial escapement for AT. Good review.

From quality of the bracelet and clasp to the dial, Omega is a superior product.

for me no doubt, the Omega AT is my watch and I am so happy with it

Thanks for the comparison. Omega and GS have a lot of similarities if not equivalencies. You would do well to research the movements, especially the GS calibre. Also check into the nuances of the GS finishing. There is also the inspiration for the that particular GS limited edition that is worth mentioning.

Grand seiko 9S85 was put into production from 2009 not 25 years ago. The grand seiko is a hand made watch with very high quality dial and case finishing. And a very reliable hi beat movement which has to be very durable as it beats at 36000 bph. These watches have to be seen to be appreciated. I own a hi beat and its a fantastic piece. Also the movement is adjusted by 1 master watch maker. Its definitely an underated brand.

Grand seiko has patek quality in an omega price.

Omega should be on bracelet to make it completely fair in my opinion.

Is it me or is the date (9) offset on the Omega?

I think you underrated the finish work on the Omega. Just my opinion but I am a collector.. I have a pretty good size Collection of good stuff. I'm usually in my omega Aqua Terra 38, .5 mm 2 tone, Silver dial Blue rubber strap with gold insert. The finish work onl the movement is just stunning! It's right up there with my Gerard Perego 1966. Which I also feel is vastly underrated. My collection has good stuff in it including one obligatory Rolex sub, vintage(zero finish work on Rolex movement). I'm nearly always in my GP or my Omega. My girlfriend liked it so much she bought one for herself 36 mm white wave dial which is absolutely stunning and bracelet to match. I'd buy an Omega World Timer but it's too big for me.

Shit man that's difficult. I own a Cartier Dumont gold as a ultiment dresswatch and a Breitling nevitimer for my casual style. I also have the Omega Aqua tear as a allrounder. So I will go for that one

As much as I like GS, there downfall is case widths case heights and poor braclets, these issues are not present in Omegas or Rolexs. So before GS can compete they need to address this.

You cannot say the Omega has better technical specs. There are only 2 manufacturers in the world who can make a 36000 vbh movement and that is GS and Zenith. Whilst Omega has the Co-Axial movement it could only work by reducing the speed from 28000 vbh to around 25500 vbh effectively a slow beat movement. GS has overtaken Omega and many others based on technical innovation and finishing. If you had only one watch it would be GS all the way…
