There’s the United Kingdom, there’s Great Britain, there’s England, there’s the British Isles, and somehow, that still doesn’t cover all of the terminology for that specific part of the world. So what’s the difference between Britain, England and the UK?

England is a country. Its capital is London and it borders Scotland and Wales, which are two separate countries.

In many ways, Great Britain is specifically a geographical term, because it refers to the whole island that comprises England, Scotland and Wales. It also is used in political terms to refer to these three countries together.

The United Kingdom is a sovereign state made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Britain is the landmass where England is, England is one country, and the United Kingdom is four countries united together.

Great Britain is so called because it is the largest (i.e. the greatest in size) of the British Isles, i.e. the islands of Britain.

The Welsh flag is not included on the Union Flag because, until relatively recently, Wales had been legally a part of England for centuries.

Surprised you didn't mention the Falkland Islands, but maybe that's a sore subject for some.

A warning: although many people around the world - and many within the UK (including me) - continue to use the term "British Isles" as a purely geographical term for the archipelago (group of islands), consisting of Great Britain, Ireland, and some thousands of other islands, just off northwest Europe - some, especially within the Republic of Ireland, see it as an imperialistic term and thus object to it. I find this silly - to me it's just a geographic term for a group of islands and has nothing to do with things that happened decades before I was born - but thought I should warn you.

It is wrong to include the various small islands such as the Orkneys and Shetlands in "Great Britain"; the latter is one SINGLE big island. Also you leave the full name of the UK as "The UK of GB and Ireland". It's actually "The UK of GB and NORTHERN Ireland".

You tried really hard to not understand the political implications of things like Wales not being represented on the flag or Territories being "defended" by Britan.
