Star Wars: A slave named Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker was a slave who left his mother for a chance at a better life. Wouldn't his story have been more compelling and tragic if his goal had been to free the slaves of a galaxy far, far away? Was Qui Gon Jinn a religious zealot whose devotion to the force led to the death of billions? Should Anakin have been more focused on saving his mother and freeing slaves than pining for Amidala in the most tepid romance ever committed to film? Should the Star Wars prequels have taken a different path?

Good stuff, Anakin is definitely a much more interesting, understandable and compelling character when he's written this way.

I feel the fact that he completely lost sight of his original motivation is the point. I've written on this subject already on my blog.

I'm glad his turn wasn't what most Prequel haters seem to have wanted, what Lucas actually did is far more compelling to me.

Anakin is a slave, he was born and raised a slave and carries that slave mindset with him his entire life.
It is no accident that George calls the Jedi relationship "Master" and apprentice. The Jedi are Anakin's masters. Qui-Gon freed Anakin but Anakin does not see it that way. He sees it as simply trading one master for another.
Obi-won becomes his master, then the emperor becomes his master. And Anakin wants Padme to be his master in the second movie. He can only see himself as a slave.
Anakin desperately wants to be "The Master" which is why he gets so enraged by the council when they deny him the rank.
In his mind he is still a slave and is not free.
It is only when he throws the emperor down the shaft and "frees" himself in return of the media. That he truly becomes free and is no longer a slave.
