In this video, we’re going to talk about why you’re feeling tired after eating protein. Sometimes, the portion size is just too large. Try consuming 3 to 6 ounces of protein per meal rather than the oversized portions you might find at restaurants. Too much protein at once can significantly raise your blood sugars.

Low-fat protein can also cause you to feel sleepy. The lower the fat content of a protein, the greater the insulin spike. Protein triggers the hormone glucagon, which counters insulin.

When you consume a combination of protein and carbohydrates, like a burger with fries or meat and potatoes, you greatly enhance insulin. This will cause you to feel sleepy after eating.

If your stomach is not acidic enough, it may cause you to feel sleepy after eating. Age, poor diet, and other factors can weaken your stomach acid. Indigestion, bloating, gas, heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD, are all symptoms of low stomach acid.

Low-salt diets can inhibit the body’s ability to make stomach acid. Sodium chloride (salt) provides chloride for your body to make hydrochloric acid, which is essential for protein digestion.

This makes sense. I had a protein rich meal that was still low carb. But fell asleep soon after eating. Now I know why.

Hello Doctor..I feel incredibly sleepy even after a small intake of carbs or protein in my breakfast and this problem is simply magnified if I workout in the morning..On the contrary no matter how heavy my dinner is, I don't feel sleepy at all..I sleep 6hrs a day..I just can't seem to function in the mornings..

I have this problem.
Eg., I had scrambled egg (3 eggs yolk, no egg white) and 2 small cheese sausages (I look at sausage ingredients, I didnt see any source of carb in it)
Also I drink ACV+lime+warm water before and between this meal. But after about 30 min, I feel sleepy. As watching your video, I think I have insulin resistance, low bile and for sure I have untreated hypothyroidism. My health is mess up from years of bad diet. Im just starting ketosis and IF. Wish me luck every one.

Hi Dr. Berg. This is kind of confusing. Can you reconcile this to the fact that too much protein will not make you fall asleep at night / right before you sleep? Because as far as your information on the previous videos are concerned, this also connotes an excessive amount of insulin, in which case protein will keep you awake at night. I appreciate all of your information. Thanks!

Yesterday I ate a lot of chicken and felt like taking a nice nap afterwards even tho I never sleep during the day.
I was curious why and now u make a video on it, its like you can read my mind dude and you do this very often, whenever I have a question in my mind you make a video on it.

i drink my protein shake in the morning and at night and here i thought it was funny that i was getting sleepy at the same time i take my protein shake. Thanks Doc, that explains alot

I have a serious problem with post meal sleepiness. I have consulted 3 doctors. Keto for almost 2 years and have had to go to OMAD for dinner only to manage it. BG is 85-100 even after meals. BP drops to sys 90s 2 hrs after eating. I feel much better fasting.

There aren't just normal people following your channel. There are also men and women that are bodybuilders.( amateur-professional) maybe you could make some videos that are more tailored to them or in your videos add a short segment about what to do if your trying to get bigger. Because they don't want to just lose fat. They want to gain muscle. (And not just 1% increase of muscle size but major gains)

I started eating more protein, and doing workout so I can gain muscle and grow. Im already feeling this sleepy effect. I hope this is just a conditioning problem and i'll get used to more protein.

I have drastically increased my protein intake in relation to a new workout programme.
I did try to get protein from natural sources, but I was eating to the point of feeling sick. Whey protein was the only method I could use to meet the demands of the new programme.

Thanks for this video Dr. Berg. I’ve been looking for something that can explain why I felt an uncontrollable sleepiness that shut my body to sleep right after eating chicken. I’ve been a vegan for 5 years and now re-thinking my diet. I never found an ex vegan complaining w eating meat again. But I guess I’ll stick w plants I feel my body is more attuned to plant-based eating

Remember to correctly calculate protein content of of animal protein. The water content of animal protein is about 70%.

I'm sleepy after I eat anything in my dinner. The reason is why I work out hard and spend large amounts of energy all day long. I have a very low intake of meat, but get over 50% of my protein with vegetables.
