Nothing sounds better than taking a nap after eating a huge meal, but what triggers that feeling?

What Is A Food Coma (and does it exist)?
“Despite the seemingly comical name, this is actually a medically recognized condition known as postprandial somnolence. Unlike a real coma, food coma is the completely natural feeling of fatigue you get when you’ve finished eating a meal.”

Avoiding a food coma after the Thanksgiving meal
“Food coma is that feeling after a huge meal of not being able to keep your eyes open and barely having the strength to slowly walk over to the couch and pretend you are watching football. The stimulation of a Thanksgiving table covered with luscious food often leads to overeating.”

It got me to the point where I would eat only once a day. Because eating puts me to sleep, and I have a heavy sleep. I can’t have a nap. The less I can sleep is 2h straight. And this happens even if a eat small amount of anything. Thats why I prefer taking only liquids like smoothies. I mean I am in my teen years I CANT BE SLEEPING ALL THE TIME

So you're saying that if I avoid eating too much carbs when I eat a big meal, I may avoid a food coma. That's awesome!

Here in Mexico we call that the "pig sickness", because it happens just as if you were a pig: you eat and then you sleep. Or at least get very drowsy.

This affects the entire Indian Subcontinent. I just realized this. It is so quiet around 3:00 pm because people are sleeping.

This was a surprisingly informative video. I really liked how she went into the pathway/s that induce a ‘food coma’, very interesting stuff!!

I got the same problem, I will eat only a small portion of meat with 2 tortillas and 10 minutes later I feel extremely sleepy and I try to fight it until I can't do it anymore and I fall asleep for 4 or 6 hours. I'm at a point that I feel I can't eat anymore. PS: I went into carnivore diet and this problem is gone.

There's a common perception in our family that eating a lot and sleeping after is not good for your body. For one, it was believed that it causes nightmares. For Asian's there is this phenomenon called "bangugot" or simply nightmares that will eventually let the victim fall asleep forever. That is why we are always told to allow the food to digest in your body for a couple of hours before sleeping.

Then there's the feeling of "hang-over" where your body is tired despite sleeping for hours. Lastly, the notion of eating and sleeping will increase the chance of your body storing the energy to your body in form of fats.

I ate nachos and it was a big meal at work and damn I’m so tired I’m having a hard time keeping my eyes open! Just ate some fruit, a banana, and coffee, hopefully that keeps me going cuz I was feeling energized this morning and now it’s all gone!
