Do you get sleepy after you eat? Let’s talk about why that is and what to do about it.

It’s important to realize that it’s not normal for you to feel tired after you eat. You’re getting fuel when you eat, so you should feel more energized. The main cause of sleepiness after eating is a high-carb diet, but what if you’re on keto?

If you’re on the keto diet but you’re still tired after you eat, there could be a few different things going on.

Causes of sleepiness after eating while doing keto:
1. Not enough hydrochloric acid in the stomach (this is usually not the big problem)
What you can do:
• Take apple cider vinegar (ACV)
• Take betaine hydrochloride when you eat

2. Your cells are not pulling in nutrients or fuel because of insulin resistance (this is probably not what’s making you tired, but it’s making you feel unsatisfied when you eat)

3. Your insulin is high (this is the real reason)
But you’re on keto, so shouldn’t your insulin be lower? Well, eating also triggers insulin. If you’ve had insulin resistance for a long time, it can take time to correct the high levels of insulin. Even if you don’t eat carbs, eating triggers insulin.
What you can do:
• Do intermittent fasting
• Keep your carbs low
• Consume a moderate amount of protein
• Give it time (it takes 1-3 months to become keto-adapted)
• Get more sleep at night (take vitamin B1 and vitamin D3 before bed)

I started keto to solve this problem and I now use this "symptom" as an indicator of the amount of carbs the food I eat has :D

A brisk 15 min walk after eating burns off a lot of insulin. Gets me past the slump. I usually crave protein b4 my salad. OMAD seems easier now that we have less hrs of daylight.

Falling asleep after eating especially in the morning after a good nights sleep is a classic symptom of food intolerance. i am salicylate intolerant, now recovering from a systemic collapse because my adaptive response to eating small amounts of fruits high in salicylates drained my adrenals and left in in adrenal insufficiency crisis. This adaptive response was first described and proved in rats by Dr. Hans Selye in the 1930's. Given how your entire health, treatment, philosophy and practice is wholly nutrition based, I am rather surprised you haven't dealt with food intolerance - it's more widespread than many know. I used to have to find a quiet place around 10am to sleep for half an hour after a good 9 hours sleep - but I would have had perhaps some fruit or tomatoes or other high salicylate vegetables for my dinner the night before. One man who developed a high intolerance to eggs, when fed a cake by disbelieving friends, assured it had no egg, fell asleep half way through the meal. !! Perhaps you could include food intolerances in your repertoire as it has great significance.

The sleepiness happened for me while I was attending junior school. The school would often write to my mum to say I needed earlier nights. I kept falling asleep in class most afternoons. As an adult I made the decision not to eat until bedtime which I've done ever since. It's the only way I seem to be able to cope. The tiredness I get from eating is overwhelming. I literally can't keep my eyes open. So thank you Dr Berg, this explains so much.

I used to nap everyday because I’d always feel sleepy and sluggish around 3-4pm. Ever since I started eating only breakfast & lunch, and less carbs in general, I never ever feel like napping or lying down anymore!

I started low-carb diet and intermittent fasting 5 years ago. It was hard in the beginning, then gradually the hunger and the craving became easier and easier to control. Along the way it turned up to be the easiest diet that I ever tried. You gotta need a long term commitment though, never expect instant result. I am now much more energetic and productive than the 5-year younger version of me 5 years ago.

It takes 2 to 3 months to adapt to your keto diet. In the meantime, listen to your body, and take the 1/2 hr. beauty sleep you deserve. Non-fortified and vitamin D3 before
bed. Thanks Dr. Berg.

An earlier video said we should take vitamin d3 in the morning because it can keep us awake by interfering with melatonin.
