With so many Entry-Level DSLR Cameras to choose from, which is the best one for a beginner photographer? The Nikon D3100/D3200/D5100/D5200 or Canon 1000D/500D/550D/600D/650D?

Find out from this video review which compares the User-interface from both Nikon and Canon Digital SLRs.

thanks for the feedback, it really comes down to your budget. Both are great cameras but i do think the extra features on the D5100 are worth the extra price tag

For me, it would be the Nikon D3200. It looks very good especially with the 24 megapixels which will be great for high detail and it also shoots up to 1080p video at 30fps so should be pretty good on that side too.

If you are a beginner and have not used a DSLR before then I would definitely recommend the Nikon D3200 as it comes with an "Easy Guide" mode which is very helpful.

Hope that helps.

Awesome, glad you see the advantage of the UI too. It really helped me when I started a few years back.

Hi I have not used the 650D but realistically speaking either should be fine, both shoot good photos and full hd 1080p video. However the D3200 comes with an easy guide mode which is helpful for beginners trying to get the hang of photography. My brother has the D3200 and he loves it.

Both are great, they make amazing cameras. At the end of the day it does come down to personal preference. In my opinion in terms of image quality Nikon produce sharper images where as Canon has better colours.

Are you looking to shoot video with your DSLR too? If so then Canon 600D as the Nikon D5100 does not have manual exposure control for video (very limiting). Hope that helps.

A prime lens would be good (fixed focal length with wide apeture) 35mm or 50mm 1.8. Will really help you explore depth of field.

Been looking at loads of reviews for entry level cameras. All the videos were way to long and didn't get to the point.

Short and suite. Very informative.

great reply from @thejan4129 below, megapixels are definitely NOT everything, it's all about the sensor and the lens you use. Both Nikon and Canon cameras take great pics.

I've just spent 30 minutes watching videos about cameras yet from your 2:11 minute video I have learnt more about the differences of Canon and Nikon, THANK YOU

Good response from @thejan4129 below. And I wouldn't agree that Canon lenses are better, both Nikon and Canon make great lenses and have been doing for many years. Right now the big players are Nikon D5200 and Canon 650D

@whizhunk well you are entitled to your personal opinion as I am to mine. All the best with your 550D

Sorry for the late response. I would suggest the D3200, it's great for both photography and video. The Canon 1100D is cheap but also lacks many features (just 12 megapixels, only up to 720p HD video etc...)

Hi, the Nikon D3200 should be out soon and if you have the money that's a great camera to start with. The Easy Guide mode is really helpful for beginners. And if you're on a budget, the Nikon D3100 should be going down in price shortly after the release of the D3200. And that's also a great little camera. Hope that helps.

I Prefer Canon for it's simple interface. But both offer great quality.
