My parents lived in Germany for a few years, and at one point my mother realized she'd accidentally started a cold war with a few of her neighbors by sweeping her front steps slightly more frequently than the previously accepted neighborhood average.

"The most important of doing a job is making sure everybody knows you did it" 😂. Lowkey kinda true.

Boyfriends voice is so pure and sweet I genuinely can’t tell if he’s being passive aggressive…😂

As someone from Denmark, this is the weirdest thing I have ever heard. You literally have a turn at cleaning the entire building? That's insane.

As someone who worked as a cleaner. People really do be putting tricks to see if you cleaned

I love how the tip isn't "how to clean well" but "how to deal with your noisy neighbours"

"Well and of course clean for real" 😂

Ahahaha! I used to work on a yacht. I had to cook and clean the interior. We only had guest 2x a month but the Captn wanted me to clean everyday. I learned to keep a rag in my back pocket and walk around with a spray bottle.
I would wipe down all the doorways and switch scents every week.
I had the same one set of linen to wash and dry.
I’d vacuum only right by the Captn’s room but made sure it was when he was taking his nap

I live in Switzerland and I have to clean the building every 6 weeks; one time, one of my neighbors complained that I didn’t clean the week I was supposed to do it and I was like “but the neighbors on the second floor saw me doing it” so yeah, make sure at least one of you neighbors sees you.

Also, when you clean the hallway in front of "THAT neighbors" door, make sure that you hit the broom against their door as loudly as possible. Preferably do this at like 7 in the morning on Sundays, so they really notice that you are actually cleaning. When they open their door, greet them and tell them and tell them that you want to make sure that the building looks impeccable.

I was pissed off when everyone thought i wasn't cleaning so I bought the oldest most noisiest vacuum cleaner (literally sounded like a jet engine) and cleaned using it along with the most squeakiest wheels of a mop bucket. I clean at 4am to make sure they wake up by the annoying sound of it. Makes sure they know you are cleaning

German here! If you need to clean the building or a cleaning service does depends on the landlords. Also mostly it's just partly cleaning. I never heard from someone need to clean the whole building. Mostly it is your floor und the stair to the floor below ( 6 Floors). From a shorter building it is sometimes your floor till the the ground floor. Sometimes other task are added like shoveling snow before the entrance or taking the big trash cans infront of the door. In cases were a cleaning service is used the payment is splitted through all residences (So is in the building I live right now). And I actually think do it yourself is not a bad deal, because it's like 20 minutes every month or something like that.

also, if people leave too much stuff outside their door, move it to the side so that they notice you cleaned

It’s also super important to slam your mop forcefully against the walls and doors while mopping, so that everyone can also hear you cleaning.

As an American, this is wild. I've never heard of a building's residents having to clean the common spaces. And it would also NEVER work here lol

I am sooo glad that I do not have to do this anymore! I remember waiting for the landlady to come home so that she sees me clean... at our new place, they have a cleaning service who cleans the stairwell and all communal basement areas and also puts the bins out onto the street on waste collection day. It is quite nice not to have to worry about that anymore.

I've never heard of tenants taking turns cleaning the building. In Greece, we have a contracted cleaning company come in once a week.

It reminds me of when my Mom was working from home and very busy but then one day she took a "break" and went out to do some gardening in the frount of the house and then everyone we saw the next few days mentioned how hard she was working the other day in the garden...unseen work never counts as work.

I don't even want to clean up after myself, let alone neighbours.
This sounds like hell 😭

Random objects being placed to test if you actually cleaned is giving me flashbacks to childhood with my german mother
