I've been struggling with painting for a long time. After watching some of your videos I was able to make my first "painting sketch" that I'm happy with. Keep up the good work. Subscribed.

I start landscape paintings with very small thumbnail sketches that have the value structure, composition and background, midground a foreground solved as much as possible. I might spend 30 mins on a thumbnail because I want to avoid messing around with the composition or anything that requires lots of creative problem solving while simply executing on the piece. The way I add color and stick to the values is to create a limited color palette, mix them together, blending from black to white from each hue in Krita. Then go over to Aesprite, turn that into a 64 color palette, and export the color spectrum/gradient out and use it as a swatch/reference image in Krita, sticking to the palette. Since the palette has the full value range, it's easier to go from black and white to color.

I'm a Korean. I am using a translator. I saw a good picture. The brush is also very grateful. I am always cheering you on.

This has been SUPER helpful! Especially as a beginnger, with so much to learn, I was totally overwhelmed about where I should start with. Your video gave me some broader ideas and confidence. Thank you for sharing with us!

I usually just start with color directly. I'm so impatient when it comes to the sketch stage. I think I get so hasty because I'm afraid of losing the initial impression of my idea.
Also I have a problem when it comes to the brush strokes. I'm not confident enough to leave my brush strokes and end up smudging/blending them.. That's what I really want to learn from your art because I can't seem to use my brush strokes deliberately.
Aside from that, this video is so helpful too! I really love the strong shapes you used here. That fallen tree is a great idea! It looks like the similar composition is repeating at the background with the bridge there on the cliff. So many interesting composition design to look at! Thank you for the amazing video!

Very nice work and you do a great job keeping descriptions clear. I agree with you about painting on top of black and white. However the guys at Brainstorm school have a more design based way of doing it that seems pretty cool. Basically it involves doing the black and white first with clear layer systems for each values. The design of the light an shade is done in in those tone layers and clipped. Then they come back in and implement color and texture in a pretty fast way. It doesn’t have a muddy look because it’s all on normal layers. No overlays or multiply. Last they go in and break up edges. I would never know it was done the way it was done in the end product. I can normally spot glazed art from a mile away.

Beautiful art! I love the viking vibes 💜💜 Also I usually do my sketch & lineart before painting, I find lines much easier to understand than painting so I plan my shapes out first before doing values. :) I massively respect people who can lay colours down and build something beautiful from the abstract.

I would encourage everyone to start with colour right away and put a "values-only"-view on a shortcut, so you can check occasionally.
