First Day as a Doctor: Medical Resident Vlog (26-hour call shift in hospital!!)

This is my FIRST vlog about my FIRST day as a resident doctor! But it’s not a regular day to start… it’s a 26-hour call shift in the hospital!! See me before and after this crazy day.

Skip from before to "AFTER" at 3:50

Freshly graduated from medical school in Canada, I’m excited (but also a bit terrified) for this huge transition. In this vlog I chat about my expectations, fears, what it’s really like on call with glamorous scrubs and pagers dating back to the 90’s!

Let me know what you think by commenting and liking - subscribe to follow my experiences as a new resident doctor!

Thanks for watching!!

Watching this now after just seeing your video where you receive your results for your final exam and you are officially a rheumatology specialist!! After 5 years of residency it's so exciting and how cool to look back at this!! Explaining what a pager is and how a call shift works seems so crazy now!!

It's great to look back at this and see that, 4 years later, she's still the exact same fun, bubbly, enthusiastic person.

I heard somewhere hospitals still need to use pagers because if there is some sort of crazy disaster with cell signalling towers/networks going down then it is too risky for hospital staff not to be able to contact each other :) and they keep them so clunky for battery life purposes :D in case anybody else is wondering.. love your videos by the way :)

She gives the best description ever of being a "real doc" for the first time. It's amazing to watch her professional and personal growth over the next several years. One of the most amazing thing is that you don't really see your own growth when it's happening, since you're simultaneously overwhelmed and distracted. The most amazing thing is a year later, come July, and you're an "R2" (second year resident). The newbies come on the ward, and you can't believe that you were ever so insecure (and inefficient!). You have to do a lot of hand-holding, and watch them take hours to accomplish stuff you could get done in 1/4 of the time. It looks like at her program, she's treated with kindness, and treats others with the same respect and kindness. She's an amazing person.

Just saw your latest video so now I’m here! I love your positivity! I am pre med and so many doctors i have talked to have told me not to do it, that I’ll regret it and i should find a different career path. 😢 seeing your videos has made me realize, it’s totally in perspective and you have to be doing it for the right reasons!

I started watching your videos about 2 weeks ago and loved them so much I decided to go back to the beginning and start there. You're still the vibrant, enthusiastic, caring person 6 years on. Please never lose that.
