"Why would god make parasites that eye human eyes?"
"Well, it's because they're poor, see, that's the problem."

She didn't say anything properly calvinist, but damn, was it close to "it's their fault because they're poor"

For this example, to use a transform a quote from Steven Weinberg, "Smart people will be smart, and stupid people will be stupid, but for smart people to be stupid you need Religion.".

This topic really does seem to fit better for a naturalist worldview.

Got to admit
Life was so much easier when I didn't have to think for myself

I like how when it's a terrible thing, it's a "natural disaster" but when humans like it, it's God's love.
Also, wouldn't poor people be *more* like Jesus, and then *less* susceptible to eye-worms? Wouldn't they count it as a win if only rich greedy atheists got eye-worms?

the flipside, it is terrifying if a creator exists and has made the world this way.

Another issue is her admitting that blindness (naturally bad/evil consequence) is not the purpose (which misses the point) of the parasite. If this is the case then why not some of the naturally good consequences that she obviously points to as a result of design and thus purpose in nature? Theists love being lopsided in their reasoning.

There is no evil.
There is only pure freedom being expressed in every way possible, resulting in the self cannibalizing nature of life.

I am theist. Once we crossed the line (Eden) all hell broke loose. We were perhaps just a tad more intelligent than all creatures before we disobeyed God. Genesis 3:22 We are now like a god and on our own.

The point is that such biological organisms evolved and adapted according to context and circumstance over many generations, according to biology, genetics, chemistry, and ultimately, physics. Dirckx and McDowell are trying to rescue a literal fundamentalist account in a way that makes all events divinely ordained - which is, I think, deeply flawed for all sorts of reasons. Stephen Fry's argument only broadly works against those who take such a theological position. I think a more interesting underlying question is this: Suppose a natural virus evolved that, in effect, could eliminate all mammalian species (i.e. including us) within a few generations with nothing to stop it - would we humans see it as "evil" - or just as a natural consequence of evolutionary processes? The question amounts to asking how do we respond to the knowledge that there might be a "deep flaw" in our biology that a possible virus could evolve to exploit? This is basically Fry's observation with the theology removed and then applied to humans rather than caterpillars.

Us: “Why did God make worms that eats children’s eyeballs?”

Dr Sharon: “Clearly poverty compounds this problem!”

Us: “Why does god allow children to be born into poverty, Sharon?”

"Why did you steal the cookie?"
"We humans are made to do things."
"Yeah, but why did you steal the cookie?"
"God gave us morals to judge what's good and bad."
"Yeah, but WHY did you steal the cookie?"
"Without god there wouldn't even be cookies."

Sharon: poverty makes people vulnerable to diseases.
God: ...I make diseases.

And this, dear people, shows us how religious faith can inspire nice, well-meaning people to justify evil.

"Poverty makes you vulnerable to diseases". No, Sharon, the question is why would these diseases exist in the first place in a world created by a benevolent God.

Phd holder : "Well, it's their own fault for being poor, you see. It's preventable in rich countries."
