As someone who was raised religiously, this is EXACTLY why I don't trust churches, and people who claim to "speak for God". Have your own relationship with God and be a good person, THAT is what I think God wants.

We have context for any line in the Qur'an, because each line reveal to resolve and determine of a problem or situation. That why we claim the understanding of the word are correct, because it implemented when it revealed. Quran not reveal all at one time, but reveal when Guide is needed at the time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, if that help.

Honestly speaking as a practicing Muslim i can genuinely say that the more you read the Quran the more deeply you understand it every single time when i study a chapter after some time of reading it i can i understand it even deeply and I know that the next time it will be even more clear to me
Quran is a book that you cannot simply understand it after reading it a single time specially when you read a translated version

It is akin to reading a book written by someone else, then meeting that author and then telling them what they meant when they wrote it. Except this book is nearly 2000 years old, far distant from our current languages, life styles, manner and figure of speaking and all the rest we can't relate to in this modern day.
A Saint of the Catholic church once said, " do not be sad that you do not receive all that scripture has to offer every time you visit it. For you are not sad that you can return to a drinking fountain without drinking it dry. "

"Imaginative exercise:" That's what he's saying. He's not bashing anyone. He's saying don't be an extreme person when it comes to organized religion or reading the Word of God as if it's more than a guide for life that was divinely inspired.
