Retopolgy shading in edit mode works much better than selecting "In Front" in viewport display

Adding to this for anyone who wants to smooth out their topology, holding Shift with the "slide relax" tool in sculpting mode will let you smooth out your topology, without changing its shape.

YOU LEGEND!!!! i always start making a model with lovely neat topology but as it increases in complexity i kinda give up a little and end up with some super bad practices, this is gonna be such a life saver <33

a lot of people are complaining about this cos its actually an outdated set up. You can just turn on surface snapping and the retopology overlays in "overlays". No need to enable "in front" settings.

At least F2 is a must. I don't see why anyone would skip that one

add with blender in the title since it all changes non stop every version XD btw in 4.3.0 in Mesh Edit Mode / shading you have a nice retopology slinder for this now ;) well at least i dont use materials.

Wait I’m gonna try the infront method for my character model I’m working on. I’m trying to give him X eyes that are outside his eye to make it a little cartoony and pop out more, but I was having trouble with the shrink wrap to get it properly aligned. I’ll update if it works correctly

In the wise words of Patrick Star, I love you.

How did you make the polygons translucent?

Typical and also made them differently colored so that they're distinguishable from the model behind?

We can do this much more easily or faster in Maya.

Why do you need Shrinkwrap, if you already have snapping enabled? Isn't that redundant?

What was the point of making a new material? It seems to have been a completely redundant step that does nothing. It didn't even have anything to do with being able to render the object in front, which confused me sends I assumed that removed the material would make it so that it would stop doing that, but we're moving the material didn't. I have to real look up this tutorial just to even begin to figure out how to stop the model from rendering in front. Literally all adding a new material dead was make it confusing what was causing the thing to render in front.

Good tutorial but it didn't work on my buck bumble model because the geometry was too horrible.

Whats the ideal retopo solution though? maya quad draw, topogun, retopoflow, something else?

but i'll loose all my details of my model, dont i?

Incredible you gotta do that in Blender, while in Maya you just only need to make the mesh live and start quad drawing 💀

Jeez what a setup. So many hoops to jump through just to get started. Great advertisement for Maya's QuadDraw.
