Similar thing happened to me, I was driving to Pakistan from India with my driving license and the army stopped me. They had guns and shit. I was terrified.

I had a similar experience. Two of my friends and I were driving to El Paso from Albuquerque, all of us being on F1 visa and none of us carrying our passports. We did stop to see the border from far, but did not go close to it, nor did we have any intentions of crossing the border. On our way back, there was a checkpoint and we were asked to stop. All of us showed our digital copies of passport and visa and we were let go after 10-15 minutes. The officer was kind and let us know that we are to carry our passports every time we travel, especially on long journeys. I have since started carrying my passport whenever I am out of town.

Not all the time but when you are travelling to another state or close to the border areas where you might have to go though border patrol/ immigration.

😂😂 this happened with me too ! I thought drivers liscense is enough and I was driving at 3 am near the borderUS - Mexico border.The officer screemed so loudly that made me wide awake till I reached my destination 😂

I went to Mexico... It was was very easy... Just walk in to mexico. Trick is, choose not the main border.
While coming back, choose main border chkpost. I chose San Diego... It was 2 hours long line. But all easy!

I used to live in south texas (edinburg -very close to US-Mexico border) and we had to go through check point everytime we went to visit san Antonio, austin, houston dallas or other places. We all used to carry passport and I-20 but they never asked for it. We used to show our drivers' licenses and they used to let us go. I guess if the driver's license is a real id, it can be used instead of your passport to visit different places of US. But if it’s not a real id, you have to carry your passport. When I moved to Pennsylvania, they asked me if I only wanted a driver's license or a real id. I got the real id even though it’s more expensive. The real id a has a star sign in it. In texas all drivers' licences are real id. But in some states, u can get driver's license or a real id.

Bhai wo state ID hai. US ka official ID nahi hoti. Abhi to citizen ke liye different ID, green card ke liye different ID hoti hai.

Bro that's state ID and cannot be used outside states. Across border the only ID that works is Passport and for travel u need visa. Even I m on F1 and to travel outside I always carry my PP with visa and even my I20 signed by the DSO to be on safer side.

Of course you need your VISA nad Passport in a foreign country at all time
Especially in sensitive border regions
