Maid cafes are weird but in America we have Hooters and people bring kids there. Every culture has weird shit in it.

Does she not know she's basically wearing a crop top

The beware of Chikan signs and women only train cars should be indicative of an underlying issue… but of course you’d probably have to read Japanese to know.

She's right to be terrified of maid cafes. You never know when there will be a shootout between two rival cafes.

The reason why she feels safer is because Japanese men stereotype western women to be more assertive and brave, thus not daring to assault them as much out of fear of repercussion. Japanese women experience a whole lotta SA despite the whole modesty thing.

I don’t think it has to do with the clothes studies show that crimes like sa and murder will happen regardless of clothing and the perpetrator will just use clothes as an excuse

Unfortunately my sister was traveling to multiple countries and in Japan she got followed by some random old guy driving past her, then driving back constantly trying to get her in the car. This happened about 7 times, that's just not normal. In the end he didn't get out of the car but it is still very scary contantly driving past trying to get her in the car and driving away only to stop again next to her after 2 minutes. following her everywhere. Fortunately she was there with her friend so they contacted each other and he picked her up and somehow lost him.

I am Brazilian (big Brazilian population in Japan) and often hear about very young, newly arrived Brazilian girls (15, 16) who are lured into prostitution.
They are offered jobs as hostess in karaoke places and soon are offered 5X their salary to go for dinner with a client. They accept and often turn out exploited.
I think there’s a side of Japan that we don’t hear very often.

From what I've heard on other channels, molesters tend to leave foreign women alone because they're more afraid that they're gonna make a scene. I don't know if this is true of course, but this is still good advice for Japanese women. Don't be afraid to speak up. You got a voice, make it be heard!

The one type of café I want to visit in Japan, most of all, are the “cat cafés, ” that feature kitties all over the place! 😸

There is a high number of sexual assault that happens in Japan, it’s often not reported and usually the perpetrator goes free with 0 consequences.

Been there. They stare at your boobs a lot, even if you don't show too much. Anything lower than neck they stare at. And yes, maid cafes are a creepy thing japanese focus on. A place where nerds are getting called 'master' and stuff. They are capitalizing on people's fetishes a lot. And there's a lot of repressed fetishes in Japan. And everywhere in ads, stores, media you see women who look like children, sexualised in such a disturbing way. Anime does that a lot. But it really stands out when you are in Japan, to the point where I had to google 'are Japanese men pedofiles?'

It's the only thing I didn't like in japan, but it's a pretty big thing if you think about it.

Oh, and I did get followed once and a dirty old guy tried to rub up against me in public transportation (not very crowded metro). Women notice these things. It felt icky.

Actually, according to international crime statistics, in countries where women are encouraged to dress modestly, sexual assault rates tend to be higher. Believe it or not, in cultures that tell women they are inherently sexual and need to cover themselves more, sexual crimes against women are accepted as more normalized and common.

When you police sexuality and bodies, everything becomes more sexual.
