Vocal Mixing Hack | 5 Steps to the Perfect Vocal

Here's my Personal Plug-in Chain that I use for ALL of my vocals! (I start with these 5 steps every time before doing anything else). ***I use a different approach for backup vocals, let me know if you would like to see a Tutorial on that.

Step 1: Record Vocals
Assuming you already know how to record vocals, here are the most important side notes:

* a. Make sure you Record them in Mono (if you didn't, convert them into Mono before moving on to the next step)
* b. Make sure there are NO Peaks. (Check your levels, bring soft vocals up and loud vocals down, just make sure there are NO Peaks in your recording)
* c. Use a Pop Filter (to reduce the number of Spikes in your recording - the fewer Spikes you have, the more powerful you vocal will be after applying Step 2 - if you need to manually reduce the Spikes in your vocal, do that before going on to the next step)

Step 2: Normalize
Normalize your audio to -1.0. This will give enough headroom to play with the vocal (with various effects) at the end of the Plug-in Chain

Step 3: EQ
Roll-off EVERYTHING Below 180hz

Step 4: Noise Gate
Threshold -45 (if not -39)
Attack 0.0 (or lowest number)
Release 243

Step 5: Compressor
Threshold -27
10:1 Ratio.
Attack 0.01 (or lowest)
No Hold.
Release 180 ms
Makeup Gain +18.0

That's it, Now you can colorize your vocal with anything that will achieve the effect you're looking for. ***Using a professional mic will give you better results. This video was recorded with a Yeti Multi-Pattern USB Mic.

BONUS:
*** Hyped-Voice-Over
Follow Steps 1-5 then Add a Reverb First, Doubler Last Panned Out 45% Left 45% Right. This creates a fuller sound. Play with various Doublers to find the one that fits your voice best.

*** Epic Movie Trailer Voice
Follow Steps 1-5 then Add a Pitch Control Plug-in. Use -54 cents (or lower to get the depth you're looking for). Some Plug-Ins alter speed, so make sure you "Preserve Time/Duration."
