One trick i learned recently is after the delay put an aggressive comp so that while the vocal phrase is running the delay is minimal but swells back in once the phrase is complete Just need to be mindful to automate if you have a "gappy" phrase, or adjust your release time but that depends how "gappy" the phrase is

Here's another fun trick I've been using since, 1979 on vocals.

I will add some fixed delay. On the lead vocal. Somewhere between, 25 and 35 milli-seconds. What this does. Is put them on the backside of the beat. Instead of on the top of the beat. Which makes them sound more rushed. Until you add this short delay. And it changes the whole feel. I liked doing that. Sometimes I would add a couple of milli-seconds to the snare drum track. Like 2 or 3 ms. And that's another amazing thing to do. As actually. That kind of, time aligns, the snare drum. With the overhead pickup. And can actually fatten up your snare drum and make it larger sounding, still.

I mean I've done all this stuff through the years since 1979. On some big-money projects. Where millions of dollars was riding on this. And you want to get it right. You want it, refined, sounding. You want to add some class. And these are small but remarkable sounding changes. And fun to do. It'll amaze you.

H Delay is great. I do recommend reducing the output knob. There's quite a bit of whitenoise that comes out of there at 0db.

Remember guys, this is just one way of doing it. If you really wanna learn to do what was done here, but in ohher contexts as well, just do these changes one by one and always listen after each change and play around with the knobs a little. That way you’ll get a full understanding of what you’re really doing.

It’s kinda like if you cook with a recipe, you’ll only know that recipe. But if you try out different spices and make small adjustments you’ll learn what each spice does and that way you’ll be able to apply those skills in any context.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to put the formant shifter before the delay in the send? It would do the same thing but a cleaner, more monophonic signal would be feeding into it, giving you better formant shifting

The great thing about this is there are no rules! You can get really creative with the processing on the delayed signal - personally I would have added something like Decapitator and distorted it quite a bit!

when i do this i just get the wet before the word, not JUST the word, like if the delay was ALWAYS on but muted, what am i doing wrong?

Does this work with Garaeband ? I can’t find the delay setting yet but have increased the volume with the fader, which adds a kind of warble effect in the vocal if I adjust the panning which seems to move the sound in either direction but I don’t know how to do that and make it save so it does it automatically .

Formant shifting with Alter Boy on stereo sources create weird phasing artifacts, unstable ones. Better to use Manipulator or some other formant shifting stuff. Alter Boy works wonders on mono sources though.
