Why is it important to learn history?

My honest attempt to answer the inevitable first day question, "Why do I need to know history anyhow"?

It is my hope that my students will be their own teachers, I am just there to get them started. I have a curriculum yes, but going beyond it and challenging norms and honing critical thinking skills is why I teach. i'd like to add to my comment that it is an issue for discussion given that reality isn't the same thing as idea. i suppose many ignorant nations in history have existed with impunity internally, i was just thinking about external actions on a nation that cause consequences for that nations actions, which is pretty common through history as well. although the premise of the statement itself can be questioned because no nation (or even person) can exist without ignorance, nobody knows everything.

Here's what gets to me about a lot of history classes. They're mostly about tests. Truth is, giving students essays and other assignments generally helps them learn more and potentially find something they're interested in, as well as form their own informed opinions. However, we're far more interested in making sure they can regurgitate information one week before they forget it entirely. Don't tell me you've never noticed the pattern before. Study, memorize, pass test, forget.

I love math and history, but math you can use everyday however we will need history in some periods as we are living as a species. We can use history to learn more and keep on moving forward into the future, we can look at the mistakes made in the past and try not to do it again so we don’t destroy ourselves. Math is good forever but history will tell is if we can make it to the. “Forever”
