"having a completely different conversation" yep, distract, deflect, change the subject, badger, berate, accuse, and apologize for things that completely miss the mark of the discussion... they will literally fake-apologize for things that don't add up.

In hindsight, 20 years past the trauma, one of my now funny moments was a rare argument (learned within a year of marriage to NOT argue with a narc). I said "it was inappropriate that you said "x...". He said "I never said that". I said, you did, it's what you came up and said to me". He said "No I didn't, YOURE the one use just used that word"....I started to say I only used that word to illuminate that HE said that word...but realized, it's useless. Shadow boxing.

It's unbelievable how similar they behave and their patterns are. Any time I'd ask about anything that didn't seem right, I'd get the "I don't know what you're talking about."" Followed by "it's always something with you." Really?

Even at the tiniest criticism, my ex husband would lose his shit and retaliate with "Yeah, well you do X!"

My entire goddamn family is like this too. I narcissists.

I just recently realized that every time there was a conflict followed with arguing the subject always turnwd to my cheating, talking with other men online. I slept with a neighbor etc. he never stayed focused on the issue to work through it and squash it. So now we're 2 months post break up and mo going back.

Them: "I did that to remind myself that's not who I am anymore. I used to experiment years ago as a swinger with one of my exes, and I don't do that stuff anymore. The access codes are just junk texts. Also I took those pictures while we were not together."
Me: "That sounds like something a person would do when they *are" still into it. And access codes only happen when you create a profile. Also, we were together, because I see furniture in the room that I put there a couple months ago."
Them: (screeching) "YOU'RE JUST TOO STUBBORN TO BELIEVE ME!!! HAVEN'T YOU EVER HAD JUNK MAIL OR SPAM TEXTS? DID YOU EVER CONSIDER THAT YOUR PERCEPTIONS ARE WRONG AND YOU'RE MAYBE WRONG ABOUT WHAT YOU **THINK** YOU SEE AND KNOW??? YOU JUST WANT TO FIND REASONS TO LEAVE ME!"
