In this video we look at what is happening with the China and Taiwan conflict in 2022. We first start by looking the early history of Taiwan and when it was first discovered as an island, all the way to Post WWII era. Then we talk about how Chiang Kai-she's troops were pushed back in the civil war that took place by Mao Zedong's communist forces. This is when the People's Republic of China (PRC) took over mainland China and the Republic of China fled to Taiwan where there were decades of hostility until the 1980s and 1990s. Relations improved until Chen Shui-bian was elected from the Democratic Progressive Party in 2000, and China passed an anti-secession law if Taiwan tried to succeed. In 2016, Tsai Ing-wen took office and is now the current President of Taiwan. Since the unrest and riots in Hong Kong in 2018, China has re-asserted its influence by adding additional security laws to prevent secession, terrorism, subversion and collusion. Lastly, we talk about the response from the United States. Although there is no formal diplomatics relations between the U.S. and Taiwan, President Biden has said that the U.S. does not encourage Taiwan to seek independence but wants to maintain peace in the region and that the U.S. supports the Taiwan Act of 1979. President Xi of China has said that it will take resolute measure if necessary if separatist forces in Taiwan cross a red line. There has a been a record number of Chinese warplane incursions sent into Taiwan's air defense zone in the past year. Some believe that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is much closer than we think.

1:42 Correction: That consensus is called "One China policy" not "One country 2 systems", OC2S refers to the system granted to Hong Kong after the hand over. The "One China Policy" is a consensus between PRC and ROC that says that although both sides have different opinion on who is the real China, they still belong to the same China.

You may ask, why would ROC agree to the "One China policy"?
There are multiple reasons. First, Most people on the Taiwan island at the time still considers themselves to be Chinese and are very proud of being Chinese. Second, Taiwan's economy is booming and was almost as big as the whole of mainland, they assumed that mainland's economy is going to collapse, then reunification would favor Taiwan's side. Third, Soviet Union just collapsed the year before, and Tiananmen square incident just happened not long ago, it's supposedly a clear sign that the communist party is going to collapse too, then, a reunification would also greatly favor ROC.

Hi Dan, thank you for the clear illustration and explanation of China vs Taiwan .

However, the term China meant ceramic wears in the old days and wasn’t used politically until Republic of China was established in 1911.

It was called Ching Dynasty before 1911 who’s ancestors were from the north of the Great Wall and they were considered barbaric to distinguish from Han people who were from the south of the Great Wall.

Before Ching dynasty it was called Ming dynasty and so on.
