Ketosis: What Is It? Is It Good or Bad for Health?

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which fat provides most of the fuel for the body, instead of carbs. You can get into ketosis by following a very low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet. In this video I'm going to look at whether this is a good idea or not.

I've noticed that you explain various nutritional concepts in fine detail for the average viewer. Thank you, Mr. Leech.

The point made about a ketogenic diets being hard to follow because of social situations, menu choices, etc. is valid, however the one concept I've incorporated into my general diet is "failing". That's right - fail on your diet. During Thanksgiving, Christmas, eat stuffing, pies, mashed potatoes, etc. Last night I had a grilled cheese sandwich and tater tots. Eat cake and ice cream on your birthday - or someone else's birthday for that matter. The other concept of my diet is this: once those individual 'failures' are over, go right back to your regular pattern of low-carb eating. I eat lower fat meats and tons of lower-carb, higher-starch vegetables. It has suited me well so far. Breaking the pattern is OK!

Good but not the whole story. The truth is that ketosis is a completely normal state, not an unusual one. Native Americans diet was almost solely Bison. Inuits had very little fruit and grain; their food was all hunted in the main. Hawaiians main diet was fish. Until agriculture carbs just were not available to evolving man all year round - how could they be? Fruits and grains are seasonal. In late summer and autumn more fruit, berries and grains became available so the bodies of the hunter gatherers would use those preferentially for energy whilst fat stores were laid down. Why? Because winter was coming obviously and lean cold times were ahead for a few months - they needed that fat.. The reason why we have seen the epidemic of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke etc etc is because now refined carbs are available all year round and bingeing on those whilst frying in corn oil and using other "vegetable oils" trans-fats is a toxic combination. Ketogenic diet probably saved my life. There are plenty of cave paintings of our ancestors hunting. How many have you seen of him eating a banana? More accuracy please A N.

Easy - body is supposed to burn fat and that's why we need to eat good fats.

Hello, I would like to know how this information applies to elite snowsport athletes? I have several girls that I coach that tend to carb restrict as a means of weight control.

Huh, I thought you'd bring up ketosis and hypothyroidism in the end, since you've written about it before. I was a little surprised to see it left out.

Ketogenic diets lead to more muscle loss and less fat loss than a low-fat diet. That's a very important side note you failed to mention. Of course no references were given for it being heart healthy or effective against cancer because there are none. In fact it will probably be bad for both. Nothing specific was mentioned either like how it's unhealthy by other markers such as elevated methylglyoxal levels etc.
