My students surpass me all the time! Chopin's teacher said (in so many words) that he didn't want to duplicate himself, he wanted to create the best version of his student. Thank you for another excellent informative video

Please make this a series, I would love to be a good piano teacher, rather than a run-of-the-mill piano teacher :D

I have been teaching piano privately for the last 6 years and as you say in this video, I have noticed that I have learnt a great deal by teaching different levels and ages. I find your videos quite helpful, informative and to have a different perspective in some matters. Thank you.

This is the perfect video I was looking for! I am just now thinking about teaching piano and this is a great help. Even after having a lifetime of music lessons I feel at a loss as to how to start. Thank you!

Great content, Josh! There's a vast amount of resources in the internet that tackle the "How to Play's" of piano yet very few focusing on the "How to Teach" aspect of piano. I'm glad to have stumbled upon this video, and thank you so much for bringing this content up!

it's probably sweet that you have students that can "surpass" some of your technical level. you should be proud that you are able to give your students the tools to study on their own. i think that a teacher that is able to teach his\her students to learn by themselves and correct their own mistakes is the best kind of teacher. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all.

So, I don't teach piano, but I wish to, and, you know, I probably shouldn't be giving a teacher advice, but I have been studying a bit and I do think I have some "tips".

1. Passion. Music without passion is nothing. If you are teaching a person, or a child, who is being forced to play, (more likely in the place of a child) then it may not go very smoothly. A Passionate person is a dedicated person. If they truly wish to become good at piano, then they will be more prone to take your advice and use it.
2. Freedom. I think, a great way to give them more passion, if they don't have it, is to not force everything on them. For music, ask "What song would YOU like to learn?" Mabye you have a song book. Let them look through that and decide what they want to learn. This was a crucial aspect in how I learned to love and dedicated myself to piano, because when I started, I played the songs that I wanted to learn.
3. Genre. Very simple. Ask what type of music they want to learn. Somebody may be learning piano for a certain reason. Mabye they want to learn Jazz, or mabye mainly Classical. That will help you in your teaching as, you can teach them aspects of the genre or mainly play the Genre that they like.

This is not tested advice, and you have no right to take it, but this is what I have seen in many people, and from my own teacher. Have a great day. God bless.

I love this - it’s very much how I teach and I have recently started to doubt myself after watching some more modern approaches to teaching - thank you for confirming I should stick with what I do!

Hi Josh, I have been wanting to say for such a long time how much I enjoy your videos. When I first came across them I though way to advanced, but I have learned so much. I restarted the piano with a gap just short of 50 years (grade 2 aged 10 - working in grade 5 now at 60). Thank you.
