Okay, I know this is a cute joke, but as a music education major who has studied some child vocal development and psychology, this is actually super valuable! Engaging with one another in this way is great for bonding as well as creating a positive association with vocalizing. If you do silly things like this with your kids when they are little, they are more likely to be comfortable with and enjoy singing when they grow up! She is also learning from you by doing call-and-response. Her imitations were actually VERY good for a two year old. She matched your rhythms and timbres very well, and she “approximated” the pitches. Even though she didn’t copy the notes exactly, she imitated the melodic contour, and that’s amazing for 2! Keep singing with her, daddy!

My 18 month old grandson loves watching this. Even in his worst of tantrums, we can start this video, and he will stop and smile and be mesmerized. We are grateful to have this during the pandemic. It is not just a diversion, or entertainment, but a way to let our grandson know what a friend might be like.
