In Concrete Glider, Adam and Jamie test the old engineering challenge that ‘like a lead balloon you can’t make a concrete glider fly!' Will they be able to bust the myth?

Using science as a tool, Hollywood special effects experts attempt to debunk rumours, urban legends and popular myths that have captivated the minds of many individuals.

sometimes i forget how long it's been since mythbusters was filmed and then Tory pulls out a brick of a flip phone and it all sets in at once.

They already proved concrete can indeed fly when they blew up that cement mixer.

The one gripe I have with the glider was the lack of a control. Means we’ll never know if Adam’s glider actually glided or if it was just a brick being thrown farther by the launch rig.

I definitely feel Jamie's plane could have flown better without the random wooden pole at the front. Definitely weighed down the front too much and caused an immediate nose-dive!

Jamie spent the entire episode shaving weight off his plane and then at the end just adds a big block of wood to the front of it

Adam's 'glide ratio' may just reflect the parabolic trajectory a brick would make... needs a control!

An addendum to "don't try this at home": please don't grind concrete without a respirator or at least a mask. It's a great way to give yourself silicosis, and a terrible way to die.

I like Jamie’s take on the little contests they had to do. Valuable insight. It’s too bad he didn’t use the launch rig.

"Is that enough suction to pull you off" my lord... lol....

Little sidenote, but as german historican, I absolutely LOVE how the expert says "the germans tried something like this in WW2" and, without knowing this specific case, just about *nobody* could tell whether that means ".. and it was ingenious, a marvel of modern engineering!" or ".. and it was even more idiotic than it sounds.".

There's something missing from their 'glide ratio' determinations. I mean, the glide ratio of a bullet would be incredible the way they are determining it but you wouldn't argue that it's a good glider...

I just realized how many builder youtubers has this inspired... We basically have a world, a community of this thing, with a LOT of active users who do similar things, and then record it in a way for us to watch. It's just amazing

I can say that in Europe at least freight trains regularly barrel through passenger train stations at full speed. And they definitely have a wake that is strong enough to feel even if you are standing behind the safety line.

I love these episodes where Adam & Jamie are in competition. 😊

I kept giggling every time they mentioned being "sucked off the platform".
I'm such a child.

For the gliders there are a lot of issues in the kind of test they did. The first was the the center of gravity looked a lot better for Adam than for Jamie, which was simply too nose-heavy and did not achieve stable flight at all. The second one is that for a real comparison, you have to get into that stable flight, where only the potential energy propels the plane forward and not the speed of the launch itself. Flight is a very complex thing. And it doesn't really scales, man-sized aircraft have around 10 times the weight to area ratio than these small model-sized airplanes. I am sure you can get a full-sized concrete airplane to fly, just build it sturdy enough and install big enough engines.

Karl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal (23 May 1848 – 10 August 1896) was a German pioneer of aviation who became known as the "flying man".[2] He was the first person to make well-documented, repeated, successful flights with gliders, [3] therefore making the idea of heavier-than-air aircraft a reality.

BECAUSE it is a commuter it needs to be a freight train. "Oh the train isnt coming yet I am not in danger" so it spaces out and gets caught by the freight train
