I moved from Seattle to Florida. The wages in Florida are about 1/2 what you get paid on the west coast and the lack of employee rights in Florida is an eye opener. Also food/groceries are more expensive than Washington state, insurance is a lot higher, and rents are not that much cheaper in Florida compared to Washington state.

As a 7th generation Californian who adores this state, I do appreciate your positive review. However I must take issue with your glowing weather report. The Sierras, a huge part of our landmass, endure extremely harsh winters. And don't get me started on the inland--100 plus degrees, which is great for the produce but a little hard on the residents. What we don't have is the humidity, which is the real killer. BTW, I have observed this reverse Texas/California migration for decades. Even Texans who flee back home can't wait to return to California. But, as you pointed out, once you exit the California real estate market it's almost impossible to get back in.

Moved from LA to Texas 13 years ago.. dont miss it a bit. Love Texas. We can afford a nice house and nice cars, a few vacations a year. Kids have a savings account thats bigger than mine. No state tax.. I could go on for days.

I will leave when I retire. I practiced down there for 10 years, moved back to California about 20 years ago. My kids and grandkids live here, the latter started getting born shortly after my return.

California is poorly run, probably criminally so, but it has been one party rule for decades so nobody does anything about it. They disregard both the California and US Constitutions, regularly. I am a native and find what has been done here very distressing.

I wonder what the plan is when nobody working here can afford to live here. There is WAY more to it than housing. Fuel is double what it is in Texas, and the roads are not as good, despite the milder climate
