Never knew I had such interesting bones in my feet! Now I know why my feet crack, and grind so much when I move them especially first thing in the morning they don’t like getting up either!

This makes it easy for me to visualize what my joints affected by gout look like. I didn't realise how small the space between the bones can be, and to think that's where uric acid crystals have been built up and causing pain all these years

Human physiology is a fascinatingly complex, integrated system: Gratitude to the humble foot.

I broke my right ankle 30 years ago taking one step out of my neighbors back door. Came down very hard because I thought the step to the driveway was not so far down. The talus collided with the tibia and a large chunk broke off at the bottom. The fibula shattered from the bottom up about 4 inches. I had surgery to put in a plate and 9 pins (I don't know why they just don't call them screws). One went from the outside of the fibula through to the tibia to hold them both in place because they had been pushed apart (later removed). Nine weeks of non-weight bearing with crutches and then 2 months of physical therapy. I have had varying levels of pain ever since. Until now! I was able to get an ankle replacement in January, after having some bones in my foot fused together last June, plus a lot of arthritis "junk" was removed from the area. I am AMAZED to say that I don't have pain anymore! I am doing PT to gain full motion in the joint and walking so much more normally. Over the years doctors have offered to fuse the joint and I always said no. I'm so glad I held out for the replacement!

In API, we were given the mnemonic "Can't Talk Now, Must Irritate Little Cody" as a way to remember the tarsals 😉

I've always said the chaotic arrangement of our wrist and ankle bones are a mess. No wonder it's so easy to roll your ankle.

The ankle can most certainly move in other directions, it might cause other tissue to tear, but it certainly can do it.

This helps visualize why and where I get pain in that region. Thank you.

Broke my ankle 7 months ago and the doctor said my entire cuboid was gone! I had to get a 6 hour surgery for him to flush out all the bone fragments and I got a donor cuboid bone implanted, still not feeling 100% but I can run again which is amazing.

Question, are you meant to land on your forefoot or heel first when walking? It's quite a hot topic of debate in the functional fitness community.

I broke my cuboid a couple of years ago when pulling a heavy cage which caught my heel, forcing my foot into the floor and cracking my cuboid, of which I could audibly hear 👂

When I was a kid my calcaneus would hurt so bad especially in the summertime when I'd go barefoot. My dad used to say I had a 'stone bruise' on my heel.

Did anyone else start moving their feet around as he was describing the bones? I realized halfway through that I was subconsciously doing that. 😂
